Let’s Talk About Floral Pricing
I get it—wedding flowers seem expensive. You see a floral designer’s minimum budget and think, “Why does it cost THAT much?” So instead of throwing out a price list, I’m giving you the real breakdown:
$10,000—Your Budget: Sounds like a lot until you see where it goes:
* $1,715—Wholesale Flowers & Produce: That’s 70% local blooms and 30% imports. If you want all-imported & premium? Be ready to stretch that budget.
* $1,684—Hardgoods Rentals: Trendy vases, candles, hurricanes—it all adds up. And trends? Always changing.
* $200—Hardgoods Wholesale: Ribbons, pins, boutonnière & corsage boxes, glue, mechanics. The unseen heroes of floral design, gone after one event.
* $484—Truck Rental: Varies with distance, because your flowers don’t magically appear at the venue. This covers safe transport—no wilting on my watch.
* $2,663—Labor Fees: Freelance designers and strike teams deserve fair pay for their artistry and sweat.
* $730—Sales Tax: Your $10K budget? It’s already shrinking.
* $2,524—Take-Home Income: This is what’s left for me. And that’s BEFORE year-end taxes.
Things You Don’t See:
Hours spent designing, sourcing, emailing, marketing, paying for my website, apps, education membership, lawyer and accountant, paying for everything else that keeps my business running plus competing with other designers who lower their prices to get the job.
Here’s the kicker, for my fellow floral designers:
If you’re lowering your prices to win clients, you’re not winning—you’re surviving. Competing on price doesn’t lead to profit, and it undervalues all the unseen work that goes into every event. Stop racing to the bottom. Your art deserves more than that.
TO MY CLIENTS:
After seeing this breakdown, do you still feel like wedding flowers are overpriced?
