Stagecraft 101 update. This week the focus was basic rigging. Students learned about the responsibilities of being a rigger, reinforcement of safety protocols, assembling truss, basic chain hoist operations, identifying floor marking for hoists and safety factors in rigging products. The class was introduced to products like spansets, gacflex, steel and shackles. Students also learned basic knots and had a chance to practice with the truss that was assembled by them. This weeks instructors were Don and Brian, supported by Kenny, Craig and Derik. Thanks as always to our partners at IATSE Local 77 for the support and Earl Girls Inc for supplying the rigging materials. The last 2 classes are scheduled for Wednesday March 22nd and 29th at Boardwalk Hall where participants can get some real world hands on experience.

Week 2 of Stagehand Training 101. This weeks instruction presented by Don Earl of Earl Girls Inc. supported by IATSE Local 77 members Mike Caiazza and Brian Medolla. The focus of the class was safety. There was far more instruction then these pictures represent. First half of class was a presentation on a range of topics, followed by a “hands on” session. Participants had the opportunity to see and handle fall arrest equipment, ladders, ramps, road cases, ropes, ratchet straps, safety vests, hard hats and some other miscellaneous safety equipment. Each participant also received a binder of information from the class for future reference. With each class, additional materials for subject matter will be handed out. The goal is to help each attendee build a catalog of information while creating a standard of operation procedures as a stagehand in the marketplace.

Concert Quality in collaboration with Earl Girls Inc and I.A.T.S.E local 77 kicked off our first Stagecraft 101 training session for new recruits at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology. This new 9 week program is designed to develop an entry point into the world of becoming a professional entertainment technician. Individuals with no formal training have an opportunity to explore the world of becoming a stagehand. Participants will get hands on training and exploration in specific categories to determine if they have an aptitude to become specialists. Subject matter includes Safety, Carpentry, Rigging, Electrics, Lighting, Audio and Video. The last class with take place at Historic Boardwalk Hall with some real world application. Successful candidates who complete the course can become apprentices and have the opportunity to take calls. The next step in this program is to have additional sessions each fall and winter, to attract more people who have and interest, but also to ensure potential candidates are aligned with professional standards that are expected with the industry. Next fall there will be additional adult evening courses that focus on specific categories, such as sound or lighting, in order to develop a deeper understanding where technicians can become more proficient in the field. A huge shout out to all involved, a total team effort. We look forward to having the most highly trained technicians in the country, right here in Atlantic City and southern New Jersey.
