Looking for a meaningful day trip close to home? I highly recommend a drive along the River Road to Grafton, Illinois, to visit the monument near the Visitors Center.

Pull into the Visitors Center, take the short walk to the display, and give yourself some time to truly take it all in. It is a humbling experience.

Standing there and learning about the brave men who scaled the cliffs during the Normandy invasion puts their courage and sacrifice into a perspective that photographs and history books simply cannot capture. These men faced an unimaginable mission, climbing into danger while naval forces provided support offshore.

As you stand before the monument, it is hard not to think about the fear they must have felt, the courage it took to keep climbing, and the brothers beside them who were depending on one another. They weren't just names in a history book. They were sons, husbands, fathers, brothers, and friends who answered when their country called.

Take the drive. Walk up to the monument. Read their story. Stand there for a few quiet moments and remember them.

Freedom came at an extraordinary price, and places like this remind us why we should never take it—or the men and women who defended it—for granted.
