I've sat quietly for a few days reading the comments, posts, and opinions surrounding the recent announcement by a social media influencer who chose to terminate a pregnancy after receiving a Down syndrome diagnosis.
I've seen people defending the decision. I've seen people condemning it. I've seen people arguing over politics, religion, medicine, and personal choice.
But every time I read another post, my mind goes to one person.
Olivia.
Not Down syndrome.
Not Trisomy 21.
Not statistics.
Not a diagnosis.
My daughter.
The little girl who loves music, swimming, animals, and making people laugh. The little girl who has endured surgeries, therapies, and challenges that many people will never see. The little girl who has taught me more about perseverance, patience, joy, and unconditional love than I ever imagined possible.
When Olivia was born, I didn't receive a diagnosis. I received a daughter.
And that is what breaks my heart about conversations like these.
Not that people face difficult decisions. Not that parents experience fear after unexpected news. But that Down syndrome is so often described as a tragedy, a burden, or a life not worth living.
Because that is not my reality.
Has our journey been easy? No.
Has Olivia faced challenges? Absolutely.
But challenges do not determine a person's worth.
Olivia's life is not less valuable than her siblings' lives. Her future is not without purpose. She is not a burden. She is not a mistake. She is not a diagnosis.
She is a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a child who deserves every opportunity to live, learn, grow, and thrive.
I cannot speak for every family, and I cannot tell another parent what decision they should make.
What I can do is tell the truth about my daughter.
The truth is that the world is better because Olivia is in it.
And if sharing her story helps even one family look beyond a diagnosis and see the beautiful child behind it, then I will continue sharing it.
Because every child deserves to be seen for who they are, not reduced to a chromosome count.
And every child deserves the chance to write their own story.
