It’s a busy season, taking me from Roanoke to Washington, DC, Las Vegas, Orlando, and Philadelphia to photograph events, create professional headshots, or do both.

When an assignment calls for additional support, I’m fortunate to work alongside talented local colleagues who join me on location.

During my recent trip to Galicia, the land of my ancestors, someone lent me a remarkable old book that opened an unexpected window into my own family history.

The book contains records connected to a notary who collected payments from people in Pontevedra under the old Galician system of foros. For generations, many families who worked and occupied a finca held what was called the dominio útil, while another person or institution held the dominio directo. The families paid a renta foral, often in agricultural products such as grain or w**e, for the use of the land.

Looking through those pages, I suddenly found a familiar name: my great-great-grandfather.

Seeing his name recorded in a book documenting the lives and obligations of people in Pontevedra more than a century ago was an extraordinary moment. It transformed history into something personal—a direct connection between my family, the land, and the Galicia I had traveled so far to rediscover.

Sometimes our ancestors leave behind more than stories. Sometimes they leave their names on a page, waiting for us to find them.

I'm going on a trip. What lens should I bring?

Oh, what a question! We photographers always struggle deciding what equipment to take.

But once you're on the plane or the train, far from home, you have to make the best of what you brought with you.

When I was young, I traveled with only two lenses.

No zoom.

A 35mm and a 135mm.

And you know what? I don't remember complaining that I didn't have the right lens.

Because I learned that my legs were my zoom.

Move closer. Move farther away. Change your position. Look for the picture.

That's one of the most important skills we develop as photographers.

The great war photographer Robert Capa famously said:

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough."

Sometimes you don't need another lens.

You just need to get closer.

The CHCI team is busy preparing for HHM — the Hispanic Heritage Month conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Jonah, Nick, and I will be there documenting the event, and we’ll also have a professional headshot station where attendees can stop by and update their headshots.
