Fewer than a few hundred of these birds exist anywhere on Earth, and almost all of them depend on one stretch of restored prairie outside Eagle Lake. 🌾

The Attwater's prairie chicken used to number in the millions across the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast prairie. Habitat loss brought that number down to almost nothing, and today the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is one of the last places on the planet actively working to bring the species back. That work looks less dramatic than people expect. Volunteers and biologists spend long days scattering native seed by hand, running controlled burns to reset the grassland the way lightning strikes used to, and pulling out invasive brush that has no business being there. It's slow, unglamorous, and absolutely essential.

Standing out in that tallgrass at golden hour, watching a burn scar still smoldering in the distance while a line of people quietly reseed the ground around it, it's hard not to feel like you're watching a species get a second chance in real time. Conservation success stories rarely happen fast, and this one is still being written.
