This one’s for my fellow vendors. I love this photo of me and . Wanna know why? It reminds me why I keep going
In this time when we’re surrounded by chaos and tragedy, it’s easy for us to feel like our work in the wedding industry is frivolous. When so much needs to be done to address suffering, it’s easy to ask, “What am I doing here arranging flowers? Or building seating charts? Or in my case, writing pretty words?”
(Well one, you’re a human living in a capitalist society, honey. Don’t you dare fault yourself for doing whatcha gotta do to pay the bills.)
But beyond that, moments like the one in this photo remind me that I’m not just an officiant- I’m a ceremonial midwife. I pour my heart and soul into creating containers for joy meaning, and transformation. I foster presence and create temporary respite from struggle and worry.
This photo reminds me that… We need changemakers, but we also need to fuel our changemakers. We need to give them meaning and magic, beauty and community, love and care. We need to give them core memories they can hold onto when the nights are long. And what a privilege to get to hold their hand (or hand them a tissue) in the moments those memories are being made.
As wedding vendors and creatives, we’re way showers. We may not have the world we want yet, but our craft brings people together and creates a temporary paradise that can help them imagine a better world.
Beauty isn’t frivolous. It’s strategic. It’s fuel. It’s delicious. It’s sustaining. It’s natural. Its visionary. It’s important.
