Highway 12 in Utah connects the towns of Panguitch and Torrey through a landscape of such concentrated geological drama that even experienced travellers describe it as the most scenic highway they have ever driven.
For about 120 miles, the road passes through red rock canyons, over narrow ridges with sheer drops on both sides, through ancient forests, and past geological formations of breathtaking variety and scale.
The route passes through or alongside three national parks, a national monument, and a state park, more designated natural wonders per mile than any other road in America.
At the Hogsback, a section of the highway that follows a narrow spine of rock with canyon views dropping away on both sides, the road feels less like a road and more like a tightrope stretched across one of the great landscapes of the American West.
