On this day in 2002, Senior Chief (Highest Rank: Command Master Chief) Britt Slabinski went above and beyond the call of duty while serving our nation during the War on Terrorism, for which he would later receive the Medal of Honor. Today, he is one of only 61 living Recipients, and his story continues to inspire.

Slabinski displayed extraordinary heroism during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Leading a reconnaissance team on a mountaintop, their helicopter was attacked, forcing a crash landing and ejecting a teammate. Slabinski rallied his team and initiated a rescue mission, facing intense enemy fire. He fearlessly charged enemy positions, personally engaging bunkers and directing his team's fire in close-quarters combat. Despite heavy casualties and a deteriorating situation, Slabinski maneuvered his team to safety, directed crucial air strikes, and requested reinforcements. Over the next 14 hours, he carried a wounded teammate through treacherous terrain, called in fire on the enemy, and stabilized casualties until the hill was secured and his team was extracted. His courageous actions, leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the Naval Service.

Preserving stories like Slabinski’s is essential—not only to honor their sacrifice but to inspire future generations with examples of valor, integrity, and service. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is committed to ensuring these incredible acts of bravery are never forgotten and continue to serve as a beacon of hope and resilience for our nation.
