Wayside Grange and Theatre

Wayside Grange and Theatre Great summer last-Saturday-of-the-month concerts with Maine bands, and Real comfy theater seating. Beginning January, 2021 the monthly meetings are over Zoom.

History
The North Dexter Grange was incorporated around 1916 into the National Order of Patrons of Husbandry. Granges were originally founded as a cooperative agricultural organization which equally valued both men’s and women’s work as well as their vote. All grange hall buildings were designed to serve as a hub for local social and community activities. This includes a stage, large meeting hall

space, a kitchen and dining area. Times change, though, as do businesses, occupations and social needs and so the North Dexter Grange eventually folded, ownership was reverted to the Maine State Grange (MSG) and the building was abandoned. In the late 1990s several Dexter residents rallied and tried to buy the building. Their hope was to revive it as a social and community hub by creating a theatre. But the MSG didn’t want to lose a grange, so in 2002 a new grange (Wayside Grange #590) was created which would share space with the separately incorporated Wayside Theatre. Wayside Theatre is a 501c(3) non-profit and all Theatre members are also members of the Grange. The Wayside Grange/Theatre meets monthly, usually the second Tuesday. If you want to contribute to the Zoom meeting contact Dave at [email protected]. You can also contact Dave at 924-5035, or Joe 277-3733

If you can spare a little bit of time to help us, we’d sure like to hear from you. We’re a group of friendly, local people who love bringing fun, food and music to our little Grange and Theatre.

DEXTER - Wayside Grange & Theatre is pleased to continue their Concert Series beginning Saturday, May 30th and then continues through October. The Wayside Grange & Theatre entertains the Penquis area with a wide variety of music, some of which stems from the area and while others travel a great distance to bring you top notch entertainment. The 2026 lineup begins with Tuesday Knights, which consists of locals Joe & Nellie Kennedy, Plus Brooks & Kennedy.

BROOKS & KENNEDY: Four old friends, Ken & Jane Brooks and Joe & Nellie Kennedy, perform acoustically on guitar, mandolin, stand-up bass, dobro and harmonicas with renditions of classic/traditional country& Americana music. The lead & harmony vocals are tight, sweet and well rehearsed.

The instrumental work of Ken on guitar & Joe’s harmonicas are just right for every song and they are ably backed by Nellie’s mandolin work and Jane’s bass playing.

All four band mates are extremely active in promoting country & bluegrass music in Maine and have been inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum. Ken serves as the chairman of the board of directors and Jane and Joe serve on the board. Joe and Nellie serve as officers for the Bluegrass Music Association of Maine.

TUESDAY KNIGHTS: The Tuesday Knights, a five piece acoustic band and consists of a seasoned group of old friends started as the pandemic was slowing down. A favorite location for us to gather was at Patkus Guitars in Waterville, usually on Tuesday nights. Hence, the name Tuesday Knights!

The talented friends include Nellie Kennedy of Ripley on mandolin and her husband Joe Kennedy, harmonicas; Terry Spearrin, Skowhegan on bass; Bernie Staples of Madison on guitar; and Harry Richter of Waterville on resophonic guitar.

All the Knights share the vocals and each brings a long history of performing; representing a wide variety of styles of music. The Wayside show will showcase some of their current favorites of classic country, bluegrass, swing, & instrumentals.

McKusick Petroleum is again partnering with Wayside to foster great music in the Penquis Region and with their generous donations & time, help continue the Wayside Grange & Theatres 'Music Mission'.

The historic Wayside Grange building is in North Dexter, Maine and creates the perfect setting for music and theatre. The building has served the N. Dexter community since 1919 and continues to provide quality & family friendly entertainment.

Wayside Grange & Theatre proudly announces its 2026 Concert Season

DEXTER - Wayside Grange & Theatre is pleased to continue their Concert Series beginning in May and goes right through October. The Wayside Grange & Theatre entertains the Penquis area with a wide variety of music. Some of the musical groups stem from the area and others traveling a great distance to bring you top notch entertainment. McKusick Petroleum, again is fostering great music in the Penquis Region with their generous donations to help continue the Wayside Grange & Theatre music mission.

Tuesday Knights will open the show and Brooks & Kennedy will perform after intermission.
June 13th brings a FREE Concert, The Wooden Project. Carl McPhee returns to Wayside this year as a staged concert free to the public as The Wooden Project, a Bluegrass and Country ensemble from the south shore of Massachusetts.
Catch him again at the South Sangerville Grange in August for the Perseid Meteor Show and you can find more about this band on Facebook: The Wooden Project
June 27th Back Woods Road debuted on the Wayside stage in 2025 and returns with a new guitar player, Corey Bonnevie, considered one of the best flatpickers in New England. This is straight, old-fashioned Bluegrass. Not the really slick stuff. But delivered with a lot of energy. Richard Bernier (dobro), Jane Bernier (guitar), Mike Conant (fiddle), Dimitri Eleftherakis (bass), Corey Bonnevie (guitar).
Find more about Back Woods Road on their website at backwoodsroadband.com

Yippee!!! On July 25th the Wayside players once again bring the “wicked popular” Wayside Theatre Annual Variety Show. Original skits, comedy, and local musicians comprised this annual, old-fashioned variety show.

Last year, we took Big Pharma’s advice and found out whether Skyrizi is right for you.
The year before, a snarky Artificial Intelligence gas pump outwitted Bill Egerd. What social trend gets humorously picked apart next?

Resolve to come and see this and a whole lot more for yourself.

Back by popular demand Beartrack grace our state on August 29th: Siblings Tom Venne (guitar) and Julie Hogan (bass guitar), backed by Freeman Corey, Jr. (fiddle) and Sten Isachsen (mandolin), return to Wayside for the third, consecutive summer.
Not strictly a Bluegrass band, they wander to Country songs. They have fun, engage the audience and are a joy to see and hear. Check outo their website at
beartracksband.com

September 19th we are pleased to be hosting Timberdoodle and Friends. This will be the first concert of Toby Hall (banjo), Sam Brown (guitar) and Stuart Moore (fiddle) as Timberdoodle. They are very informal, playing for the enjoyment and haven’t played any festivals. But they played the Variety Show in 2025, did such a good job, and have a lot of really nice music.

The denizens of Piscataquis County can seek them out at Blanchard Days. Individually, Stuart and Toby play the Monson Jam every Friday either at the Finn Hall in the summer or the gallery downtown in the winter.

All three are members of Some Reel People, which plays the contradance monthly at The Commons Hall in Dover-Foxcroft, Dexter Age Friendly, and Friends of The Meeting House and, in 2026, St. Patrick’s Day at Dirigo Pines, the Bread Fair in Skowhegan, the Downeast Folk Festival in Topsham, and the Harmony Fair.

And to finish out the season on October 24th Stillwater graces our stage in their debut appearance in North Dexter. Stillwater Takes their name from the river in Old Town, this six-piece band from near and far formed in 2023 and consists of Trip Nickel (flatpick guitar), Yoni Musher (mandolin, mandola), Kiera Luu (double bass), George Horvat (fiddle), Noah Vaughn Jackson (banjo), and Jack Pasternak (dobro, banjo).
They played at the well respected Joe Val Bluegrass Festival in 2026 and you can find out more about this band at stillwaterband.com

“Bluegrass” BearTracks Band & friends are storming the Wayside stage August 23rd

DEXTER - Wayside Grange & Theatre is excited to host Beartracks, featuring siblings Tommy and
Julie & friends, bringing you a great night of Bluegrass Standards, Originals & Songs with a Twist.

They began as a trio in 2004 with Legendary Dobro player Junior Barber who convinced his cousins,
Tom and Julie, to make the switch from playing traditional country music in clubs to playing bluegrass
oriented material at festivals around the Northeast. The main focus of the group was the sibling vocal
harmony of Tom and Julie and Junior’s unique stylist approach to playing resonator guitar. Although
not a traditionally structured bluegrass group, the trio gained acceptance and a solid fan base at
festivals throughout the Eastern US and in Canada from Calgary to PEI.

When illness forced Junior to retire in June of 2013, Beartracks added a banjo and fiddle to give a
more traditional sound. Beartracks has been fortunate to have some very skilled musicians working
with them over the years and have found, that as long as Julie and Tom are together, the backbone of
Beartracks remains the same.

Since their inception in 2004, Beartracks has recorded six albums, available on CD Baby, I-Tunes,
Rhapsody and Spotify which includes traditional bluegrass songs, classic country with a bluegrass twist
and originals.

Tom Foote, from KAOS-FM, Olympia, WA commented, “Smooth vocals from Tom and his sister Julie
in the old-time duet tradition...
