Plant of the Week… ✨Petunias✨

Petunias are a lot of people’s favorites. With so many colors and shapes and patterns to chose from! They are so easy to love.

•Lighting- petunias need full sun. At least 6-8 hours of full sun a day. The more sun they get, the more flowers they will produce and they will be less leggy.

•Water- keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Drainage holes are key. In the hot summer weather, they should be watered daily.

•Fertilizer- petunias are heavy bloomers and love being fertilized. You can use a water soluble fertilizer every 1-2 weeks or use a flow release fertilizer following label instructions. If your petunias get yellow leaves and slow down on blooming, it’s trying to tell you it needs food!

•Pruning- petunias appreciate a good prune. They can be fun to shape too! Pruning encourages branching and more flowers! Wave petunias especially like a mid season trim.

Traditional petunias bloom longer when deadheaded. Many of the new varieties are self cleaning. But all petunias still benefit occasionally from being deadheaded.

•Common pests- aphids, budworms, spider mites and white flies. It is best to check weekly and be sure you are looking at the undersides of the leaves. That’s where pests like to hide.

•Florist tip• Prune your petunia plants every 3-4 weeks. Trim about 1/3 of the length off. Fertilize right after pruning, and water deeply. Within a few weeks, they will bounce back fuller and more flower dense!
