When it comes to writing and performing poetry, I’ve learned over the years that everybody’s learning curve is different. I’ve seen beginner poets take almost two years to write and perform a decent poem, and then I’ve seen people come right out the gate cooking, Chef'n- serving everybody up.

If you truly want it when it comes to being an artist, and you’re willing to put in the time and effort to get there, eventually, you will.

My learning curve as a poet took me almost two years. And when I finally had my B-Rabbit moment (8 Mile movie reference)—my coming-out party as a poet—it happened in another state. Then, I had to fight like hell over the next couple of months to achieve that moment again.

Long story short, if you’re striving to be Him or Her when it comes to artistry, and you love it and respect it, you will get there. But remember, everybody’s ETA is different.

So stay on the path, trust the process, and make the journey- becoming the artist you want to be.

I gave Detroit poetry everything. I accepted it into my soul, but then again, I most definitely shared my soul with this art form.

For many years, I was self-conscious about the way I moved, constantly worrying about coming across as if I didn't have good intentions in whatever I was trying to achieve.

I've dealt with toxic, manipulative, narcissistic, abusive, and dishonest individuals throughout my 17-year tenure as a Detroit poet—people whose egos were far bigger than their artistry or their goals. Friends who became enemies, enemies who became friends, and others who likes to operate in between.

But I also met a lot of beautiful people with beautiful souls and amazing artistry. I've had the pleasure of meeting, teaching, learning, workshopping, and building with people who love and respect poetry even more than I do.

Maybe it's just the Libra in me, but I see it all as a delicate balance on a scale of artistry—aka, The Community—a balance that tends to shift from time to time on the Detroit Poetry scene.

Sometimes I feel so loved, and other times I feel so underappreciated. But I keep reminding myself, take your the emotions out of the community and keep it straight on the artistry, I call it' the balance, my balance that i've been tightrope walking on for many years.
