I thought I had known the sensation of flying before we met, but I had actually never even left the ground. These last three years married to the love of my life have truly flown because, well, time flies when you’re having fun!

I’ve come to realize there is no better time than the one we’re living, as long as that time is spent together.

Every day spent with you has made my life better than I ever imagined it could be. Happy three year anniversary Nicki, here’s to many more. 👰🏼‍♀️🧡🤵🏻‍♂️

Lautner’s Light!

As a photographer documenting all Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing some truly remarkable architecture. Wright was always experimenting with light, making each of his creations unique in how it interacts with its environment. And trust me, not all great designs handle light well—Wright’s own portfolio has its moments of brilliance and missteps.

So naturally, when I step into the work of another master architect, like John Lautner’s The Lautner Compound (pictured here), the first thing I want to explore and photograph is how the design plays with light.

For me, one of the best ways to evaluate great architecture is by looking at how it handles light throughout the space. Is it diffused? Harsh? Does it highlight key details? Is it subtle or dramatic? Does it pit on a show or is it shy?
So, with these questions in mind…how does Lautner’s light look to you?

On February 15th at Modernism Week, I’ll be leading a presentation at the Lautner Compound, diving into Lautner’s approach to light and comparing it to his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, particularly at Taliesin West. It’s also a rare opportunity to experience the compound, enjoy some cocktails, and take part in an exclusive tour.

Space is limited, so be sure to check the link in the comments for more details and to grab your tickets. I hope to see you there!

Enjoy cocktails, meet the owners, and hear from celebrated midcentury architectural photographer Dan Chavkin for Modernism Week on February 21st, 2025 from 5:30pm-7:30pm.

This is a rare opportunity to view “The Lautner Compound” at night while you enjoy cocktails with owners and designers Tracy Beckmann and Ryan Trowbridge. As a bonus, guests will meet and hear from celebrated photographer and author Dan Chavkin.

The owners of The Lautner Compound recognized Dan’s incredible talent and asked him to be the first photographer to capture their completed "The Lautner" renovation in 2012. His images went viral and were published in magazines and press outlets worldwide.

Dan will share insights from his 20-year career as an architectural photographer specializing in Midcentury Modern architecture, showcasing the iconic structures and design principles that define this influential era. He will discuss the creative process behind capturing the essence of these architectural masterpieces and the stories they tell. Additionally, Dan will delve into the themes of his four published books, which explore the intricate craftsmanship, innovative design, and architectural brilliance of the Midcentury Modern movement, offering a comprehensive look at its lasting impact on the world of design and architecture.

Dan Chavkin began his photographic career studying at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Upon graduating, he moved to New York to start his career as a professional photographer shooting celebrity portraiture for major magazines. An avid enthusiast of all things Modernist, Dan began collecting midcentury Modern furniture, vintage architecture, design books, and ceramics to feed his passion for Modernism. In 2014, Dan co-authored the book Hand-In-Hand about midcentury designers Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman. After ten years of photographing Midcentury Modern architecture in Palm Springs, Dan’s second book, Unseen Midcentury Desert Modern, was published in 2016. Star Trek: Designing the Final Frontier, about midcentury design in the original 1966 series, was published in 2021. Dan co-authored his most recent book, Architectural Pottery, on the 1950s California-based company. Dan resides in Palm Springs, California.

In addition to the lecture, guests can tour "The Lautner," which is comprised of 4 incredible "Lautner Living Units." This is your chance to immerse yourself in John Lautner’s spectacular and visionary architecture. Lautner is the most famous protege of Frank Lloyd Wright, and "The Lautner" is reminiscent of Wright's school of architecture, Taliesin West, in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he studied for 6 years. John Lautner was one of the most important contemporary American architects of the last century. His work concerned the relationship of the human being to space and of space to nature. Lautner is also known for the Bob Hope and Arthur Elrod residences in Palm Springs.

Join us for Modernism Week February 15th, 2025, from 5:30pm-7:30pm, for an exclusive presentation by renowned photographer and educator Andrew Pielage Photography as he explores the personal connection between two of architecture’s most visionary figures: John Lautner and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Discover how Wright, the master of organic architecture, mentored a young Lautner, whose bold, futuristic designs would go on to reshape modern architecture. This captivating session delves into the shared ideals and inspirations that defined their groundbreaking work—highlighting the influence of Wright’s desert laboratory at Taliesin West on Lautner’s visionary ideas for a master-planned community in Desert Hot Springs, California.
In 1947, Hollywood movie mogul Lucien Hubbard commissioned John Lautner to create a master-planned community of multiple Lautner Living Units, a swimming pool clubhouse with an expansive pool and multiple plunge pools, and commercial spaces. Unfortunately, only the 4 prototype Lautner Living Units remained standing and were impeccably restored starting in 2008 and brought back to life by the current owners in 2012. Their resurrection of the development is now known as The Lautner Compound.

Through Pielage’s lens, you’ll explore the seamless harmony between architecture and nature that both architects championed while examining how Lautner’s fearless approach pushed Wright’s original concepts to new frontiers.
