āOMG, event planner?! That must be SO glamorous!ā
Yes....annnndddd, no. š
We genuinely love what we do, and most days we feel like weāre living the dream. But weāve had a few conversations lately that made us think, āHuh. Thereās actually a LOT to this work that people donāt see.ā And honestly, thatās probably true of every job!
So, enjoy a little behind-the-scenes p*ek at the glamorous life of an event planner:
1. The August hailstorm totaled my car on the way home from a site visit. Apparently event planning needed an automotive plot twist.
2. There is no 9-5 here. Evenings at home often mean design projects, packing supplies, emails, or clickety-clacking away at my computer. to the worldās best unpaid, didnāt-apply-for-this-job husband who gets recruited for late-night projects.
3. Being a solopreneur in a first-to-respond, always-on-call industry means more late nights than we anticipated when opening Evara. The business does not simply tuck itself into bed at 5pm.
4. You will become extremely comfortable driving golf carts, catering carts and dollies. With enough experience, probably with your eyes closed. (Please donāt.)
5. Nature. Beautiful nature. Chasing off snakes before ceremonies, shooing foxes, deer, raccoons and all of Mother Natureās other children before clients ever notice.
6. Blood, sweat, dirt and the occasional tear are just part of the uniform.
7. 4:45am is not an especially unusual time to wake up. Or get home.
8. Sometimes we live a lot of life in weird places. Coffee shops. Supply closets. Coat check carts. Eating dinner wherever we can find a 12-inch patch of space. Honestly, weāre just happy to get off our feet.
9. And then thereās the part that matters most. My baby will grow up knowing her mama chased her dream, and I hope she knows she can chase hers, too. But sometimes that means saying goodnight over FaceTime, hearing second-hand about the sweet parts of her day I missed, or leaving my rockstar husband to solo-parent for an evening, a day, or an entire weekend.
Is it glamorous? Sometimes. Is it exhausting, weird, messy and occasionally completely unhinged? Absolutely. Would we trade it? Not a chance. ā¤ļø
