SHE'S A 14-YEAR-OLD RISING STAR
About 2 weeks ago, at the Miller Theater in Houston, Texas, Tejano music legend and 5-time Grammy Award Winner, Little Joe Hernandez of Little Joe y La Familia, introduced 14-year-old rising star Teresa Garza to a packed theater of over 6,000.
Joe had seen Teresa perform in a video, but it was the first time he had actually met her. As he introduced his special guest, he told the audience, "I've traveled the world performing for 65 years, and I've seen many great talents, but this young talent just blew me away, and I just knew that I wanted this young lady to be part of this show tonight.
When Teresa Garza and Mariachi Voz took stage, Joe asked her, "Is this the first time you've been on this stage?" She said, "Yes, sir." Then he said to her: "I've been doing this (the Miller Theater) for 47 years. Somebody's going to take over, and you're the person to do that. I hope I'm around long enough to get your autograph." Then to the audience: "Remember tonight you saw a future superstar, getting started right here in Houston at the Miller Theater. And I am so proud to have been the person to introduce you to her "
Following an introduction by a dear friend of 30 years from Killeen, Texas, I had the pleasure of speaking with Teresa’s grandfather, Isidro Garza—a structural engineer, prominent Tejano rights activist, former Texas LULAC executive, and political figure. We discussed Teresa's journey, familia, mutual friends within the legendary Tejano music community, and the economic and business strategies shaping today's music industry.
Teresa's voice is still changing! But her passion runs deep, and at 14, Teresa is a throwback to Mexicana and American legends like Lola Beltrán, Amalia Mendoza, Linda Ronstadt, and Lucha Villa. She doesn't even truly understand her gift yet. Two things are for sure: she is destined for greatness, and she'll be coming to Denver at some point in the near future.
I agree with Little Joe. If Teresa continues her journey in music, I also hope to be around to get her autograph when she blossoms, crosses over into all levels and genres of music, and becomes the powerhouse that she is capable of becoming. Spread the news: La Familia is looking for the best Mariachi in Colorado to accompany Teresa. This is a Selena deja vu moment, but bigger.
