Magic With a Message

Yesterday, I got to incorporate one of my favorite routines, “Flip” into my Cultivating Educator Resilience training at Bolton Central School District. Remember life is like a coin flip, you can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you react.

I will never forget. I was on the corner of Western Ave and Ontario St in Albany, NY waiting for the bus with my friend Aaron, when my brother called and told me what had happened.

I will never forget. The fear, panic, confusion, disorientation and feeling of helplessness feel like they were 25 minutes ago. What does feel like a very long time ago, is what America was like following 9/11. It saddens me that a whole generation of young people missed seeing the absolute best in Americans.

I will never forget. Going home to NYC a few days after for Rosh HaShana and going to volunteer in the Armory. There I was met with people from all over America, people I would most likely never come in contact with, people who were mostly from what we would now call ‘Red States.’

I will never forget. We were all there for the same reason, to help, to help, to help. To help anyway we could. Maybe unbeknownst to us at the time was, we were also there to help and support each other. People who were scared, traumatized and feeling helpless came together to help because we knew it was the only thing we could do. Think about that for a moment. Nothing mattered except people wanting to help. We truly saw the best in each other. We all demonstrated what true magic is. And, I will never forget.

I will never forget. I pray it doesn’t take another tragedy for everyone else to remember who we were on 9/12. The generation who experienced the best in America should commit themselves to showing this disenfranchised generation what we are truly capable of. I urge you to never forget. In a world that is way too dark, commit yourself to being a light. I wake everyday and in my prayers and mediations ask myself: Who Am I? How can I shine my light today? This is my goal with Magic With a Message, to inspire people not just by my routines, but the message behind them; the magic of community and how there is nothing more magical than supporting one another. On this solemn day, ask yourself, Who Are You? How can you help light the way? How will you never forget by spreading your magic around?

Heartbroken to learn about the passing of arguably the best magician of his generation, Juan Tamariz. I’ve learned a lot from Juan’s videos and writings, but perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned from Juan is to embrace the joy of performing magic and how the key to a good magical performer is to ensure your joy is evident to your audience. I always hoped I would get the opportunity to experience the magic of Juan Tamariz live.

RIP to a true master. May his memory always be a blessing.

I hope everyone is having a magical week. I haven’t posted in a while, as it’s been an up and down few weeks. But a real highlight was Sunday’s The Society of American Magicians Assembly 24/International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 186 annual picnic and bbq. We couldn’t have asked for a better day on Lake George. It was fun seeing the great David McClements perform some astonishing closeup routines for my wife. I had a blast during the stage show performing one of my favorite routines Wes Iseli Magician & Illusionist’s incredible coin-flip trick. So grateful to be a part of this amazing community.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts’ exhibit Mystery and Wonder: A Legacy of Golden Age Magicians in New York City. Wow, what a treasure trove of magic history. It was humbling and inspiring. So much on the giants of magic, Houdini, Kellar, Thurston and Herrmann. I even bumped into one of my fellow The Society of American Magicians Assembly 24 members.

So cool meeting Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS, CEO of Enough and host of the No Magic Pill podcast. Blake doesn’t need any magic pills as the work he does and the amount of lives he has positively impacted are beyond magical.

It was an absolute pleasure and a privilege to be able to use magic to help the students in the special ed class at Fieldstone Middle School talk about their mental health. There’s nothing more magical than connecting with kids who normally struggle to connect with others. As always, I included Wes Iseli Magician & Illusionist’s Flip trick to make a point about how we can’t control what happens to us (as life is a coin-flip), but we can control how we react to what happens to us. The girl who won was ecstatic and beaming with joy. Afterwards, the teacher told me how these kids aren’t used to winning and it meant more to her than I could imagine. A special day, with a special groups of kids.
