One year ago today, we lost the man whose vision, craftsmanship, faith, and generous spirit gave life to the place we know and love as The Legacy at Indigo Falls.
Long before it became a wedding venue, this land was Don Tidwell’s labor of love. Over the course of decades, he and Sheila transformed a quiet piece of Red Mountain into a place where family gathered, music filled the air, and lifelong memories were made. Much of what guests admire today was built by Don’s own hands—from the timber and stonework to the peaceful spaces that invite people to slow down and celebrate life’s most meaningful moments.
Don was proud of his family’s heritage as a fifth-generation Cherokee and a descendant of Young Deer. His love for this land was rooted not only in its natural beauty, but also in the history and legacy it represented. As we continue researching the history of Indigo Falls, we are discovering just how deeply the stories of this place and Don’s family may be connected.
Perhaps no feature better represents his heart than the cross that stands atop the chapel. Don handcrafted it from dogwood trees, carefully wrapped it with Sheila’s grandfather’s leather plow lines, and climbed to the peak of the chapel to install it himself. It remains a lasting symbol of his faith, his family’s heritage, and the love that was poured into every corner of this special place.
In 2012, that dream was shared with others as Indigo Falls opened its doors, welcoming thousands of couples, families, and friends. Countless weddings, celebrations, and new beginnings have taken place here, each becoming part of the story Don began writing so many years ago.
Today, one year after his passing, his presence is still felt in every beam, every trail, every waterfall, and every sunset over the lake.
This property has always been more than a venue. It is a place where history, family, faith, and legacy come together—a place built with hard work, guided by purpose, and shared with love.
Thank you, Don, for creating more than a destination. You created a place where generations will continue to celebrate, gather, and begin new chapters.
Your legacy lives on in every couple who says “I do,” every family that gathers here, and every visitor who experiences the peace and beauty you so lovingly created.
