The Persephone period is almost behind us. As daylight inches back above 10 hours, plants will slowly wake up but pansies are already leading the way. They’ve been quietly holding blooms through short days, cold snaps, and winter weather, and now they’re getting ready to take off. Expect stronger growth, brighter color, and more consistent blooms as the light returns.

If your garden made it through winter with pansies, you did something right. Spring is knocking!

With all this back and forth let’s make life a little easier and teach you how to daisy chain your frost cloth inbetween freezing temps.

Our third year on the farm was truly something special. Every season we learn more, grow stronger, and fall even more in love with this work. Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way, we couldn’t do this without you! There is so much more ahead, and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next.

Paperwhites are one of the few flowers that bloom during the Persephone period. This six week stretch happens when daylight drops below 10 hours a day, causing many flowering plants to pause or stall bloom production, luckily we have a few flowers we can still rely on to give us blooms during this period of the year.

Prepping for yet another cold front. December through February is all about covers on, covers off, timers on, timers off. One week it’s 80 degrees, the next we’re dipping below 30. It’s a wild ride, but I wouldn’t trade our growing zone for another. I truly hate the cold and feel spoiled to farm somewhere with so few days that are actually too cold to work.

It felt good to do a little harvesting today even if it was just filler. This is and this patch I didn’t even plant, it came back on its own from seeds that fell off the Cerinthe that bloomed in the spring. Unfortunately Cerinthe does not do well when the temperatures drop below freezing so it is a plant that we need to cover if we have multiple days of freezing temperatures.

Why We Add Calcium Nitrate to Our Hydroponic Tulips.

When growing tulips hydroponically, what goes into the water matters just as much as the bulbs themselves. One step we are adding this year is adding calcium nitrate to our trays and here’s why:

Calcium helps strengthen cell walls, which leads to sturdier stems and healthier overall growth as the tulips develop. Stronger cell structure also means the bulbs are less susceptible to breakdown, which can help reduce issues with mold and rot in a wet growing environment.

The nitrate form of nitrogen provides nutrients in a clean, readily available way without encouraging excessive leafy growth. Combined with proper water depth, airflow, and sanitation, calcium nitrate helps create conditions where bulbs stay firmer and healthier throughout the forcing process.

Hydroponic tulips don’t have soil to buffer stress or provide nutrients, so everything they need must come from the water. This small but intentional step supports stronger stems, cleaner trays, and better quality blooms from start to finish.

Follow along as these tulips move from bulb to bloom.
