Erykah Badu took over Shyboy HiFi last night with her close friends & family. A show that was announced the day before it happened and had sold out RSVPs within 20 minutes. I’m honored to have been able to document such an iconic moment in Dallas music history.

Between 9-10:30PM there was private album listening session followed by a Q&A panel. DJ Sober opened up the night and set it off just right, followed by Low Down Loretta Brown. To my surprise (and many others’), Thundercat popped out from the back and even sang some of “Them Changes” during her set. Who had any of this on their bingo card? Honestly.

From opening in March of this year to hosting an event like this that pulled out people from every corner of this city is nothing short of incredible. shyboy.hifi and the entire crew has done a phenomenal job of curating a space that truly celebrates the essence & purpose of music. Not only have they consistently brought out some of the most iconic names in the DJ space, but they have also succeeded in providing a platform for local talented DJs to showcase their art without restriction.

Awready Merch & SPEWCATACLISM have been organizing these CR8TS shows at Dr. Jeckyll's Beer Lab - this is a clip from Jewell Ave John’s performance near the end of the night.

This was my first time making it out, but the lineup has always been solid. It’s been a mission of mine to catch Stik F**a out here ever since I learned he’s local to the Fort Worth area, so this one lined up perfectly for me. His energy on that stage was crazy. It’s been a while since I’ve seen an artist engage with the audience on that level during a show.

CR8TS has become a really solid outlet for local Hip-Hop producers & artists to showcase their work. I’m also a huge fan of it being held in the Arlington area - a nice middle ground for Fort Worth & Dallas folks to meet. Isaac & Tay are really curating something special here - a much needed platform that’s completely free and open to the public. I’m looking forward to the next one!

This Thursday, May 21st, on the patio of Ruins in Deep Ellum from 7PM - 12AM, catch the Fresh 45s crew and the final time we will be joined by EyeScream & Sasasa before they move back to after being here for 4 years.

Fresh 45s isn’t just a monthly event. Fresh 45s is a - it’s family. This is my home away from home every third Thursday of the month at .

For the past 4 years, you’ve been able to catch me at Ruins hanging out with these guys. My brothers. How I got introduced to Fresh 45s is a funny story. If you’re curious, read along.

I started collecting [again] in 2020, which is why I started this IG page in the first place - simply to post my growing collection. Over the next couple of years from there, I met Statik Selektah and we became friends through playing Warzone (there’s a little more there, but I’ll keep it brief). Bobbie & I took a trip to hang out with in August of 2022. At this point in my life, I loved music, yeah, but I think my true understanding of music was lacking. It’s one thing to love to listen to music, it’s a completely separate thing to be immersed in music as a culture, as a community. This trip took me to that next level. I was exposed to music in a way I had never been exposed to before - all thanks to Stat. It shaped my view of music, most notably -hop at this point. I caught a bug.

I had an itch to get more involved when I got home. I couldn’t just come back and go back to my day-to-day life staying inside and not experiencing what Dallas had to offer. I had to do more. Oddly enough, I was hit up by inviting me out to Tarantino’s for a BYOV night. The DJ was none other than Leo J. By the end of the night, & I exchanged info and he ended up being my pipeline into the hip-hop scene in DFW.

Leo J is a legend out here and is a wealth of information. A standup guy and a true pillar of the community, he introduced me to the Fresh 45s crew, Battlegrounds, and so much more. From there, it was just a matter of going outside and supporting all of these people that were doing dope things that I met through Joel.

Sound Advice No. 11 with the legend Louie Vega this past Thursday was incredible. An extended sound advice session at that ran from 6-8:30. brought out his unreleased, currently untitled Elements Of Life album on exclusive records.

The album is set to release in October of this year and contains 18 entirely original tracks with insane features including , , , & just to name a few. When he says original, he means it - going as far as to record his own kids’ laughter into a track.

On top of playing this upcoming album for us & diving into the process of creating such a masterpiece with so many legends, Louie also spoke about his journey to get to this point in his life. He explained how he and were introduced in 1990 while Kenny was working at a record store, where their friendship evolved into one of the most notable partnerships in . Kenny would make beats while Louie played keys back then, eventually making history over and over again, including influencing broken beat when they remixed Urban Species.

Louie’s history spans back to #1985 when he started playing in clubs for kids between 16 - 20 years old, where & were in the crowd.

He would play at salsa meets jazz nights amongst legends & Roy Ayers. His influence ran so deep, he’d end up with access to albums on reel-to-reel tape before they came out on vinyl to play at clubs, 6-9 months before they were even set to be released!

Following his sound advice session on Thursday, he actually went back to Shyboy the following Friday for ANOTHER sound advice! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it to that one, but I did get there in time to catch the last couple hours of his set in the main room, which was nothing short of mesmerizing.

I’m forever grateful to have access to these moments & be able to witness masters at work. These are some of the most inspirational & memorable nights of my life. Big ups to Louie & his team, and of course everyone at .hifi including ,

This past Saturday marked the 7th Sound Advice session at Shyboy HiFi, hosted by the great DJ, producer, label head, and multi-instrumentalist Osunlade.

Widely known for his impact in house music, is much more than just a house music producer. In his own words, he set out on his initial venture into the genre with the intent of making soul music at a faster tempo; an accomplishment which was clearly achieved based on listening to his vast, impressive catalogue. A catalogue which ranges from to funk to and everything in-between.

During the sound advice session, tied much of his music into the Yoruba religion, which is a traditional West African religion originating from the Yoruba people in Nigeria & Benin. Something that stood out to me was his passion for ensuring he represents the culture in his music & artwork appropriately. He hit on how Orishas are often represented as familiar characters, but they truly represent nature itself - for example Shango (thunder), Ogun (iron), & Yemaya (ocean) to name a few. A great example of the lengths in which he goes to ensure these godly bodies are accurately depicted can be found in his artwork for Idiosyncrazy, which he made an immense effort to find the correct shades of colors to use for it, noting the difficult hunt for lapis lazuli, a rock known for its intense royal blue.

Little weekend wrap up taken from my handy EOS R6

Friday we stepped out to see & rock the main room at Shyboy. This was our first time checking out this duo, but it definitely won’t be the last. Really dope guys with a fantastic selection, and turns out Matthew is from the area I currently live! Small world.

Saturday was long - went digging over at Retroplex Records in Grand Prairie with the homie & walked away with some gems (not pictured). After that, we met up with , Willie Dutch, & to have some dinner at Deston’s with the wood grain carpet (also not pictured but had to be mentioned) before heading over to for

To wind down the , I hosted a music learning session at the house on Sunday led by my good friend, and dope producer (not pictured) and then went back over to .hifi that night to see & rock the main room.

In Sheep’s Clothing took over this weekend, starting off with this Lovers Rock Sound Advice session in the vault. A pioneer of listening bars in the states, was a massive inspiration behind the inception of .hifi - this coming directly from the visionary himself,

ISC took inspiration from the concept which originated in Japan - something that was discussed in depth at the Sound Advice session hosted by last month. ISC has taken that concept and implemented it in a way that respects the original idea while advancing it to new heights, helping to shine a light on this alternate listening experience here in the US.

Led by & , this specific Sound Advice session (the first of of 3 hosted by them this weekend) dove deep into Lovers Rock, a sub-genre which brought more female artists to the forefront of Reggae music. I’m still not as acclimated to the world of Reggae & it’s sub-genres as I’d like to be, but I surprisingly knew quite a few songs & labels that were discussed during this session - one of my favorites of which being Jennifer Lara’s I’m In Love (which I am still in dire need of on 45). There was also much discussion around Athens Of The North, a label I’ve been following and buying from for quite a while, & their compilation albums which highlight some crazy Lovers Rock chunes. Big ups to and the work they put in every day to bring some amazing music back to wax the way it’s supposed to be done.

All in all, it was another great day for a Sound Advice session. There’s still a couple of tickets left for the next Sound Advice which is tonight at 6! Head on over to and grab your’s!
