Thistle + Wood Photo Hi, I’m Shelby! I photograph intimate weddings and adventurous elopements; my work is rooted in storytelling and the beauty of wild places.

I am Shelby: a woman who thrives to share light with others through the outlets God has blessed me in. Photography happens to be an amazing role I am able to do that through. Me: checks weather all week
Forecast: “Sunny.”

Me: checks again 20 minutes before the session
Forecast: “Still sunny.”

The mountain 30 minutes later: 🌧️⛈️🧊

A random thunderstorm and hail shower was definitely not on the itinerary, but somehow it gave us one of my favorite sessions in 10 years.

The mountains are gonna do what the mountains are gonna do.
Huge shoutout to these two for laughing through it, embracing the adventure, and trusting me when everything got a little wild.

Some of the most beautiful moments happen when you stop fighting the unexpected and lean into it instead. 😋

This wedding was one that kicked off my spring season, and gosh I’d happily love to relive it!

The rain never quite fell, but it gave us the mood…which is my FAVORITE when I’m at !

Deep green forests. Soft skies. An elven crown. Tweed suits. Candlelight. String lights glowing beneath the trees…Meagan and Dalton created a wedding that felt like it belonged in a storybook - timeless, whimsical, and entirely THEM!

And to end the night? Meagan chopped off her hair. Talk about an exit! 😋

A perfect ending to a day that felt straight out of Middle-earth. 🤍

Beautiful photos often come wrapped in the unexpected. 📷

Sometimes that means a dramatic sky and a mountain view. More often than not it means me crouched in a field looking like a goblin with a camera. 🤣

Around a year ago, I was driving home late at night after a wedding when a song came on through Spotify, and within seconds, this entire vision flooded my mind that was timed so beautifully to the song. A couple on a mountaintop. Fog rolling across the peaks. A full brand refresh. A shoot that somehow held everything I love most about photography all at once.

It felt far too specific to have come from me alone. (I was exhausted and worn out from the wedding…not in the space to be dreaming, haha) I knew God was placing something on my heart.

For the last year, I worked to bring this vision to life. I planned a trip into the mountains during early spring, trusting we’d find the rain I had imagined. Instead, this spring became one of the driest seasons we’ve had in a long time. Every forecast showed sunshine and blue skies. We pushed the shoot back over and over again.

Then my friend Andrew said something I don’t think I’ll ever forget:

“If God gave you the vision, He’s going to make it happen exactly the way He intended.”

The morning of the shoot - the final option of the days we had, we woke up to full sun again. And we were shooting at midday. Of course!! But as we drove higher into the mountains, clouds started rolling in. During the hike, it was sunny, and then within minutes of reaching the summit, storm clouds wrapped around the mountains from every direction.

For the entire shoot, it looked like it was about to pour on us at any second. The clouds circled the mountain the whole time, creating the exact mood, texture, and feeling I had carried in my head for over a year. And somehow, the rain never fully hit us.

The second we packed up to leave, the clouds broke apart and the sun came back out.

It felt impossible. God had painted the sky exactly the way He showed me a year before on that drive home.

This shoot is a reminder to me that faith looks like continuing to trust even when everything around you says it shouldn’t work.

This is only the part of what came from this vision, and I can’t wait to share more!

Andrew and Blythe chose to get ready together; no rushing, no timeline pulling them in opposite directions. Just the two of them, moving slowly, helping each other button sleeves and adjust jackets, write vows, pausing to laugh, to breathe, to take it all in. It was so refreshing.

And honestly… this part of the day is one of my favorites of a wedding to document.

It’s often the piece that gets overlooked. Couples think about the ceremony, the views, the portraits, but the getting ready portion? It holds so much. It’s where the weight of the day starts to feel real., and you’re not performing for anyone - you’re just together.

With elopements especially, there’s so much more freedom. If it’s just the two of you, you get to step into the day side by side from the very beginning. You can write your vows in the same space. Read them out loud to each other before anyone else hears them. Help zip the dress. Straighten the collar. Be part of every moment, not just the “main” ones. It makes the day feel so much more rich a slow.

Because with most weddings, couples don’t even get to spend a bulk of the day together. And that’s a reason why I love how elopements challenge that.

Andrew and Blythe leaned fully into that—and it felt like such a reflection of what an elopement can be.

Slower. Softer. Intentional.

Not just a ceremony… but a whole day you actually get to experience together.

If you’re planning your day, don’t overlook this part. It might end up being the piece you remember most. 🤍

They turned their wedding day into a weekend.

Tucked away in the hills of Lookout Mountain, surrounded by their closest people, they slowed everything down, stretching the celebration across days instead of hours.

No rushing from one thing to the next.
No tight timeline breathing down their neck.

Just space to be present, to actually feel it all as it happened.

I got married in a similar way, and it is the best way to celebrate your marriage…in my opinion 😋

Their family stayed together at this incredible Airbnb - rolling hills in every direction, wildflower fields, views that felt completely private. It was absolutely refreshing!

I was only with them for a short part of the day, but by the end of it, it felt like I had known them for years. I felt genuinely sad to leave.

After the ceremony, the couple and I piled into my car and drove over to Cloudland Canyon, still in their wedding clothes, and hiked down to the waterfall together.

Those are always my favorite days. Peace, intentionality, ease, and pure joy. I love when I get to be reminded that wedding days don’t have to be this big, stressful event. Sometimes they can come right from the heart and be absolutely remarkable.

This session felt like such a true reflection of Rachel + Chris.

They described their relationship as whimsical - a little fairytale-like, but also really grounded in how well they understand each other. And honestly, you can see that in the way they interact. Nothing felt forced. Just easy, natural connection and a lot of laughter.

We spent the evening on the mountaintops in Dahlonega as the light faded, lanterns came out, and the sky softened into those dreamy clouds. We even caught a rainbow off in the distance. I adored my time with those too - it felt so relaxed, joyful, and easy.

They’re planning a fall wedding here when the leaves are at their peak - and if it feels anything like this evening, it’s going to be such a happy day. 🥹

It’s been a little quiet over here lately.

Not because there haven’t been stories worth sharing… but because keeping up with Instagram has started to feel like a lot more than it used to, and my motivation has been a little harder to find.

But this morning… felt worth breaking the silence for.
We woke up to fog draped over the North Carolina mountains- one of my favorite things.

Right now, we’re in an extreme drought here in the Southeast.
We’ve maybe had rain once or twice in the last month. Just full sun, every day… no clouds.

And honestly? This is my version of seasonal depression, haha! 😋

I’d trade it in a heartbeat for clouds, for rain, for mornings like this.

Next week I’ll be spending more time in the mountains with people I love, and I’m really looking forward to the peace that always comes from time in these beautiful hills. 🤍

Last week in the North Carolina mountains…

Lindsey told me before the shoot that she was hoping for clouds, mood, and maybe even a little rain.

(Which, if you know me… is basically my photography love language.)

But when the day arrived, the sky was clear and bright. Full sun. Not a cloud in sight…of course 🤪

But as per usual the mountains have a forecast of their own…

We wandered through the forest while the light softened. We waited. We watched the sky. And just as we climbed to the top,
Clouds rolled in. The wind picked up. Blue hour settled over the ridges. And far off in the distance, a storm began flashing quietly across the horizon.

The wind was wild. The air was electric. It wasn’t too hot or too cold. The mountains felt endless. 🥹

And moments like this are exactly why a 10-hour roundtrip drive will always be worth it.

I will never get tired of photographing love in these mountains.

They reached out just a week before their elopement.

One of the quiet gifts of the off-season is a little more breathing room - and in this case, it meant I was open for Casey & Michael. In retrospect…I am so glad I was. Because this became one of those days I will look back on in my careers and deeply cherish.

We hadn’t spoken in person until the day of their elopement. When I arrived and hugged Casey, I couldn’t help but comment on how incredible the moody, fog-filled weather was. She smiled and said something I’ll never forget:

That while this kind of weather might normally feel discouraging, because it was ME there documenting their day… and because she trusted how I work in conditions like this… she was completely thrilled. She couldn’t wait to see how I would capture their day.

Biggest compliment ever.🤍🥹

It was 35 degrees. Fog hung low. Ice clung to the falls. We were immersed in the clouds entire time until, right at the end when we were going to take in the view, the fog lifted just enough for us to the canyon walls.

These two stepped into it all, celebrating their union with steady hands and brave hearts, letting the weather become part of their story instead of something to fear.

This is what it looks like to lean in.

And this is why I love what I do.
