So what does “sustainable floristry” actually mean at Story Floral Design? It’s not one single practice. It’s a collection of decisions I make throughout the entire design process, from where I source flowers to how I build an arrangement to what happens after the wedding is over.

I source locally whenever possible. I use reusable mechanics. I spend hours refining floral recipes so I can order intentionally and keep waste low. And when there are flowers left after an event, I compost or donate them.

But there’s another piece that I think is just as important: sustainability influences how I design. Sometimes the most sustainable solution requires more planning, more logistics, or more work on site. Sometimes it means designing an arrangement differently than I would if I were using traditional floral foam.

And I think that’s where sustainability becomes really interesting. Because I’m not trying to make the exact same floral designs using a different set of materials. I’m allowing the materials, mechanics, season, and logistics to influence the art itself.

You see the finished design. I see everything that had to happen to make it possible.

The sourcing. The vessels. The mechanics. The logistics. The problem-solving. The hours of designing, loading, installing, adjusting, and sometimes rethinking the plan entirely.

There’s so much of the floral design process that never makes it into the final photographs.

That’s why I’m starting a new series: The Making Of. A look at the thought, artistry, and work behind the finished designs.

The best wedding days are the ones where you can look around and feel completely at home in the details.

Sustainability didn’t start when I started learning floral design. It started with how I was raised. Growing up in Montana, I developed a deep love for the outdoors and an appreciation for the responsibility we have to take care of the places we’re given.

Those values followed me into adulthood. I do my best to be sustainable in my personal life, I buy almost everything secondhand, and I’m always thinking about how the choices I make today affect what we’re leaving behind.

So when I became a florist, it felt natural to start asking the same questions of my work: Can I create beautiful floral designs while being more thoughtful about the resources I’m using? What happens to the flowers after the wedding? Can I design with mechanics that can be used again? Can I source more of what I need locally? And perhaps most importantly, can sustainability actually make the work more beautiful and intentional? The answer has become a resounding yes.

This is the beginning of Rooted in Sustainability, where I’ll be sharing the decisions, processes, and behind-the-scenes logistics that shape the way I design flowers. Because sustainability isn’t an add-on to my work. It’s the foundation of how I design.

It means so much to me when a couple walks away from their wedding feeling like the flowers truly felt like them.

Fall wedding flowers can look so many different ways. 🍂

One of my favorite things about designing wedding florals is seeing how differently each couple interprets a season. These are a few of the fall floral mood boards I’ve been creating with my couples this year, each one with its own palette, texture, movement, and overall feeling.

From moody and tonal to unexpected color combinations and sculptural details, there’s so much more to fall wedding flowers than the traditional rust + burgundy palette.
