Today at St. Columba's Church, we celebrated Fr Joseph Greene’s 20th year in the priesthood. Our parish had the honor of hosting his Ordination, and after several years of serving as our Curate, he moved on to his own parishes in Greene Co, GA and New York. He returned to us a few years ago and it’s been a huge blessing to have him back home.
He’s a dear friend, a fabulous guy, and an outstanding priest.
Today I had the honor of gifting him this cake. Fr Joe is famous for weaving song lyrics into his homilies. I happen to know he is a big Morrisey fan, so I took the lyric “Every day Is like Sunday,” and inscribed a poetic latin translation, “Quotidie instar Dominicae” on the base of the sugar monstrance.
Fr Tripp said several people were concerned the host in the monstrance was real, but nope, it’s all just sugar. The stole is red for Ordination, the back of the cake looks less like a stole and more like a cope, so it’s an abstract nod to priestly garments.
For those who don’t know, a monstrance is a vessel which holds a consecrated host behind a glass window for the purpose of Adoration or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
