How exciting!
Big news: a $750,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant is set to help create a Community Theater Center by transforming a vacant former church into a new downtown theater space, part of a $1.5 million redevelopment project.
The funding, announced by Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL-04), will be matched with another $750,000 in local investment to create a 6,050-square-foot Community Theater Center featuring a 200-seat performance hall, stage, dressing rooms, and event space.
“This is a tremendous investment in the future of our local economy,” said Congressman Robert Aderholt. “Projects like this community theater program will not only enhance quality of life for residents, but also attract visitors, support small businesses, and continue the strong momentum we’ve seen downtown.”
City leaders say the project builds on strong tourism growth, with more than 800,000 visitors reported over the past year.
Mayor Woody Jacobs said the project reflects both preservation and progress. “We are incredibly grateful to Congressman Robert Aderholt, his team, and ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell for their support in securing this ARC grant,” he said.
Officials say the new theater will serve as a cultural hub for local performance groups and community events while helping further energize the downtown district.
