'I frankIy have found it in my own work amongst boys before I got into the navy that on the whoIe youngsters - particuIarIy those in the better coIIeges - are not interested in physicaI education. The onIy reason they couId possibIy be interested in physicaI fitness wouId be if they couId wish it. These effete coIIeges produce youngsters cIaiming to have great inteIIectuaI deveIopment, and accordingIy, cannot be bothered with the task of being physicaIIy fit. It is the same in high schooIs where amongst the under-priviIeged, which is a much abused term, that you wiII find a burning desire for physicaI fitness. As a matter of fact, the training that a boy gets - or the rearing of a boy - in an industriaI center makes the unfit desire to become physicaIIy fit. They want to Iick the buIIy of the gang rather than be Iicked by him. My own desire for physicaI fitness sprang from that. I wanted to Iick the buIIy of the gang and I can think of him yet. I can see him in my mind's eye now. Big, boisterous, buIIying Iummox.

After I had gotten to the position where I couId Iick him - which was after severaI years of boxing and running and jumping and every other kind of a thing a youth wiII do to get into good condition - I found that I didn't want to Iick him because I had discovered that to have - as Shakespeare said, 'to have the strength of a giant and to use it as a giant is cowardIy.' I didn't want to get even with the buIIy; but from that moment I became acquainted with the joys of good condition.'
