This wedding song was written for my niece and her husband's wedding, however the sentiments flowed directly from my own experience being married to the most wonderful man in the world, Bishop Joseph Grenier. Thirty-five years of marriage and our family life was a gift to us both. Our love is not limited to years, but will be forever.

Yesterday I had the honor of officiating a marriage between a Russian bride and an Egyptian groom. It was humbling to witness their sincere piety as we prayed together. What I was not expecting was meeting the bride's elderly parents! Her father is Ukranian and her mother is Russian. They knew no English, and I obviously did not speak their languages. The bride translated for her parents when introducing us.

I had an immediate emotional reaction as I shook their hands. All I felt was an intense sorrow knowing how their countries were at war and the losses both sides were suffering, Ukrainans because of invasion and Russians losing their soldiers in battle... I felt it physically as my heart pounded in my chest. I held back the tears that suddenly welled up. Then with translations we all had a few laughs and began the wedding where we all were united in prayer, celebrating love--a love that they shared with family and friends, who then share it with the world, so sorely in need of love today.

What little I can do to encourage and bless Love is worth my time and travel, and with each unique ceremony I know I too am so blessed.

Keep in mind, in Catholic theology, the priest does not marry the couple. The couple enact the sacrament; they marry each other! The priest is the witness for the community, the Church. The priest, in that capacity, is also a legal witness for the state.

The vital part to remember is that it is your love and vow to love for as long as both spouses remain alive that performs the legal rite for Church and state. Orthodox Christian theology understands it differently. For the Orthodox the priest marries the couple.

It is important for peace of mind for any couples who are religious to understand what is taught by your religion and think through what you believe.

Personally, I officiate weddings as a witness to the love and vows you publicly profess.
My theology is "God IS Love" so if you truly Love one another you know more about God than many people on Earth! You may never have considered it that way. Perhaps it sounds a bit too pious, but spirituality, practiced in religion, needs to be REAL. When you love each other, what you share is God, Who IS Love!
