We are deeply saddened to share that Franklin, our male African crested porcupine, passed away last week after a short illness despite the dedicated care of our staff and veterinarian.

A necropsy revealed that he had contracted toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection commonly spread through the f***s and urine of feral cats. This disease poses a serious risk to primates, marsupials, and rodents like porcupines. Toxoplasma can survive on organic surfaces such as soil for 18 months or longer after each exposure. Unfortunately, cat waste can also be spread through erosion and by other animals, making it nearly impossible to ensure that any one area is completely safe. Willow remains in good health, and we are monitoring her closely as we continue working to strengthen measures that help reduce this risk.

Franklin came to The Learning Zoo at just one month old and quickly became a beloved fixture alongside his companion, Willow. As an ambassador for his species, he touched countless lives—especially those of his keepers.

His friendly, curious, and sometimes sassy personality brought joy to all who knew him. Franklin will be profoundly missed by our entire zoo family.
