I would like to introduce myself, I'm Rena, a North Georgia native, and just before turning 50 I decided to take on a new adventure with a new found passion for a downtown building with tons of history in Commerce, Georgia. My new baby’s name is Sassy Studios, aka: My Big Box of Potential! Everything began with little more than a creative vibe and a way to expand my own investments—not just monetary investments, but investment in local communities. I wanted to create something I would love; others would love and create something that would give back. I wanted that ‘something’ to have meaning, and that would last for generations. I’ve always loved old homes and old buildings. They are filled with character, when I walk into one, I can sense its history in every brick and every board. My passion is taking neglected items and give them new life, warmth, and purpose, giving it new stories to tell to add to its history in a meaningful way. While fixing up my own home, a block farmhouse built in the 1950s, I discovered a passion for renovation. As that project finished, I realized I was just getting started! I fed my passion by looking for inexpensive smaller homes to renovate and then sell. I thought this would satisfy my creativity, but then I discovered historic Commerce. I was excited to find this gem tucked away just 15 minutes from my house, until two years ago I had no idea this beautiful downtown area existed. Eager to start to work, I found a small two-bedroom home, completed some minor renovations, then sold it to a lovely couple as a starter home. With that project done, my ambition grew, and it was on to the next project. Little did I know at this point that a LOT of changes were getting ready to take place in my life! I was looking for another older home, ideally a fixer-upper, one in which I could live and work. I couldn’t find a house that was quite right, so I began to look at commercial properties built before the 1940s. My thought was to build a loft apartment in an upper floor and create community and retail space on the main level. The City of Commerce is exploding with history and in some ways, it’s a time capsule. Each of the buildings have wonderful stories to tell. For example: Jay’s has a bomb shelter in it; another building was the meeting place of a secret society. That building has a light that was used to warn the society members that someone was at the door that still works to this day. These are just a few of the great stories found within the buildings of historic Commerce, stories that would be lost without people committed to caring for and restoring them. After looking at several buildings, I settled on 1642 South Broad, which is a brick two-story building with a wooden façade covering a magnificent white brick face. It was erected in the early 1900s by Dr. W.B. Hardman and was known as the Ford Place, the first Ford automobile dealership in Commerce and sold the famous Model T Ford. It has survived the great depression and was almost destroyed when arsonists started a fire that severely damaged the rear section. It has been many things over the last century since it was selling Model T and Model A Ford automobiles. This building has been home to a hardware store, the Commerce Newspaper, and most recently Commerce Printing. The other amazing thing that happened through Commerce was I met my now husband! Together our vision for Sassy Studios at South on Broad Commerce is a simple one; we want it to be a home for things people love. We have a passion for creativity, art, and people. What better way to get all those things under one roof than to renovate an old building that can accommodate all of those loves, and there will be a special area dedicated to the City of Commerce and local artists. We plan to have an event venue for less than 100 people, the Sassy Studio’s office, a local coffee shop, rent by the hour photography spaces, and a large hallway. You can find us on Facebook at Sassy Studios at South on Broad Commerce, Instagram, TikTok, Linked In and Alignable.

I was so happy to see this photo in the box because its my second great uncle Vadie Burroughs. This photo ran in the Commerce News some time in the 1970's. That is Uncle Vadie waiting on a customer inside of his bait shop. His shop was located in the basement of his house on North Broad Street, just passed Park Street on the right. I remember as a child going there to get bait with my family before all of our fishing trips.

Charlie Brown Produce was a great stand that offered BBQ and Brunswick's stew to go, hand made porch swings, clay pots, Fish bait and of course produce. He offered so much more. *New information from the family: It was located on hwy 441 where the present day United Community Bank is now or least in that vicinity. Parham's motel and restaurant was at that location and the produce stand was next door to it.
This photo is from the 1970's. As you can see, a whole bunch of fish were caught! Any information on names of the fellows would be appreciated. Willie (Charlie) Brown, W. T. Nunn, Terry Nunn, Ricky Hill, Rocky Brown per information in the comments. Looks like it was an old gas station/garage. Thanks for any information

This photo is from 1972. This "Perspective in Pharmacy" building looks like it was where the depot was. In the background is the W.B. Hardman building. The Commerce News was once located there from 1982-1987. Here's a video that Walk About Georgia did on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPJY79F1B3I
