Get ready, this one’s a little snarky.

When I was first starting out my competition wasn’t other magicians. It was bad magicians.

I never learned their names, because nobody ever remembered their names, but I can’t tell you how many times I heard horror stories about their shows. The details were almost always the same: an older guy, probably retired, would show up to perform for kids and just make everyone super uncomfortable. The jokes were wildly inappropriate for the age group, the tricks were borrowed from better magicians but didn’t fit their character, and the whole experience left clients saying, “Never again.”

In my first year or two, I’d often hear, “You’re the first magician we’ve had in years. The last one they hired was awful.”
By years three and four, it turned into, “Yes! They got the not creepy magician!!”

Simply put, there was a lot of damage done and I’ve spent nearly two decades working to fix it. Starting out wasn’t just about building a business. It was about climbing out of a hole I didn’t dig.
