Becoming a designer is a process.
For a long time, I didn’t have a point of view on design, only a vague idea of my own likes and dislikes combined with what seemed “on trend.”
It took a LOT of time and intentional study to dig around inside and figure out how to express myself creatively in a more authentic way.
This morning, I loved playing with these gorgeous poppies and ranunculus (ranunculi?) from and combining them with heuchera (coral bells) from the yard. This type of exploration and play is a big part of my process, because my design inspiration comes from connection with nature and a sense of place. While I don’t have any plans to become a florist or photographer, this practice helps me find my voice as a wedding designer so I can communicate more effectively with my clients and wedding pro teams.
While celebrations are a bit of a waiting game right now, I’m excited to help my wedding couples dig deeper within themselves to discover what really lights them up, because the results go beyond the wedding day.
We often rush to conclusions about our personal style, thinking the answers are trivial or obvious. I’ve been there, thinking limiting design thoughts like, “Well, people know me for this,” or “I’m pretty sure I hate purple,” (fun fact: I actually didn’t know how to elevate it!) or, “I don’t want to take any risks here because I have to live with this couch/table/whatever for a long time.” In the end, I’d look around and think, “Is this wardrobe really me?” or “My house feels so boring!” Hands up if you’ve been through this.🙋🏼♀️
Wedding couples go through this too, thinking things like, “I just want to keep this safe and traditional so I don’t hate the photos in 20 years.” It doesn’t have to be this way, though - we can create something free and joyful by honoring who you really are here and now. As a bonus, you get a more clear point of view on your own style, which will help you surround yourself with everyday design that you love well after the wedding is over. Being able to design your life is a skill that pays dividends in joy! 🌸
