Are you having Covenant Confusion? We want to clear up some common misconceptions about the covenant process over the next few weeks. Today’s topic: Covenant Violations.

Residents who have a complaint regarding property maintenance, concerns about residential exterior changes, and other issues pertaining to covenant enforcement, are welcome to submit a covenant complaint form (found on oaklandmills.org under the Covenants tab).

Here are some common myths and truths about the property concerns (violations) process:

❌Myth: OMCA goes out looking for violations!

✔️Truth: Our system is complaint driven, meaning we DO NOT go out searching for violations. In addition, you must include the exact property address and the specific violation concern(s).

❌Myth: If I submit a complaint my personal information will be shared.

✔️Truth: Violations can be (and most are) filed anonymously. And unless a complainant specifically asks us to share their information we cannot and will not share that information.

Sometimes there are issues that don’t fall under our purview. Here’s a list of common issues and who may be able help with them:

🚚Cars, Trailers, Boats, Buses, Commercial Vehicles parked on the street in any condition: contact the Howard County Police Department non-emergency line and/or the Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning.

🐕Pet-related concerns (dogs off leash, failure to pick-up p**p, noise, etc.): Howard County Animal Control.

🅿️Parking issues in townhouse/condo communities: contact the HOA responsible for that specific community.

🔥Firepit and/or grill use: Howard County Fire Marshall.

Did you know we have a Community Resource Officer? He can help with non-emergency questions directly related to the Oakland Mills Community. Call the Community Outreach number for more info: 410-313-2207.

June is National Homeownership Month. During this observance, we celebrate the dream of homeownership and the importance of helping more families build long-term stability and generational wealth.

In Howard County, one of the ways we are doing that is through settlement and downpayment assistance for eligible homebuyers. Since 2019, Howard County has helped 329 households purchase a home through our affordable homeownership programs, including OWN (Opportunities for Wealth-Building Now), by providing more than $10.7 million in low-interest loan support. This is the highest number ever in an eight year period for Howard County and these programs help reduce one of the biggest barriers to buying a home: the upfront cost.

Homeownership matters because it provides a foundation for the future. During National Homeownership Month, we are proud to support more Howard County residents on their path to owning a home.

For more information about the Settlement Downpayment Loan Program through OWN, please visit: https://www.howardcountymd.gov/DHCD-SDLP.

Meet OMCA Board Chair and Education Committee Chair, Jonathan Edelson!

This summer will mark 24 years living here in Oakland Mills. Along the way, my wife and I welcomed two daughters to the world, and they have thrived in our cOMunity and our schools. One just finished her first year in college, and the other is finishing her freshman year at OMHS.

We owe a debt of gratitude to our village and strive to pay that back and ensure others will have the great experiences we've had here in Oakland Mills. My wife is a past president of the Stevens Forest PTA, and in addition to serving on the Oakland Mills Village Board, I am the outgoing president of the Oakland Mills High School Fine Arts Boosters. I want to ensure our schools and our community gets the investment and support it needs and deserves, including that much delayed and deferred renovation of OMHS. I also hope to see improvements in the relationship between the Columbia Association and Columbia's villages as this unique arrangement has been historically so much more than just a business agreement. There's no place like hOMe!
