Lizziebhandmade

Lizziebhandmade I began costuming in 2011. I've learned so much over the years as I try to make my kids imaginations & expectations a reality.

I enjoy figuring out how to make it all come together. I also started quilting in 2018 and have fallen in love with it too!

I was asked to help with costumes for our school musical, Imagine a Dragon. I met with the directors, set a plan and went to work. I recruited two lil helpers and they helped me work on all of the pieces of the show- they made capes, skirts, and helped embellished the hero’s and princess shirts. The show was great! It has a fun story line and the kids are so talented!! The directors did a great job.

Monet inspired impression
Project by

I didn’t do well at getting pictures of the artwork happening, because we did a lot in a one short class time. First we painted our plaid background. Then we painted a vase. And finally we painted our greenery with our fingers and swirled two pinks together to make the roses.

Parabolic Curves

I love sewing and I love geometry so I was very excited to do this project with 5th grade. I knew that this would be new to 99% of them, but I didn’t anticipate how hard it was for to catch onto it. Once they figured out the pattern of it they did enjoy it. I think. The finished projects look great and I will definitely try it again.

Artist Feature: Ruth Asawa
Abstract Sculptures

Ruth Asawa was a renowned sculptor known for her unique wire sculptures and her dedication to making art accessible through her advocacy for public art and arts education, particularly for children. For our project we worked with string, a very special glue solution and balloons. This project wouldn’t have been possible without having our amazing parents come and join us. The kids loved every part of this one.

Paul Klee inspired Castle and Sun
This project was inspired by his famous Castle and Sun painting. We made a basic city out of lines and shapes, colored in crayon and then did a red watercolor wash.

A cute little winter landscape with a hare made from tangram shapes. It’s always important to work on our scissor and glue skills.

Origami Snowflakes
Radial Symmetry paper sculptures
from

This was an introduction to origami for many of the kids. They learned three folds, the hat, the kite and the samurai. And we talked about lateral and radial symmetry and what they needed to do to keep their snowflakes symmetrical as they designed. Time is always an issue for most of the kids- origami is a tricky thing to learn quickly and the hour goes by so fast. But we had some really cool snowflakes created by these kids.

Watercolor Resist with salt

This project is tried and true and still magical for the kids doing it for the first time. We discussed symmetry, both lateral and radial, and how to recognize and create each type. The also learned a little bit about how to use watercolor paints and brushes. They loved creating their own snowflakes. And the reactions as their snowflakes magically appeared were the best.

Artist Feature: Jeff Koons
Balloon Dogs from

My favorite art days are introducing the kids to new art and new artists. They loved Jeff Koons Balloon Bunny and Balloon Dogs. We learned about shadows and highlights and how that can make 2 dimensional objects like paper look more 3 dimensional like an actual balloon. They also worked really hard on their cutting skills- it is such a hard thing for these little hands.
The finished projects are so cute.
