My client requested an ensemble MJ Smooth Criminal performance for his birthday celebration. Here is a look into the process.

I am proud to be Puerto Rican 🇵🇷
Puerto Rican culture is truly beautiful, and I am dedicated to protecting it.
Our culture is powerful and resilient

Choreographing Plena dance and creating a Plena song was an intentional choice.

Plena has sometimes been called “el periódico cantado” - “Sung Newspaper.”
The lyrics are connected to the current events.

In our case, our group came together for the Puerto Rican Parade (25) to bring the message-

Puerto Rico is not for sale
Our Beaches are not for sale.
El Yunque is not for sale
We need to defend Puerto Rico, the years of colonization have impacted the island in devastating ways

Statistically, 2/3rds of Puerto Ricans are living in the United States rather than in Puerto Rico.
Tax cuts for rich Americans but not Puerto Ricans.
Puerto Ricans can barely afford to live on the island. Made worse by Act 22 and Act 60, these laws have caused massive gentrification + displacement.
Privatization of the power grid and Luma taking control of it has caused island-wide power outages and daily power outages for many.
Protected land is being sold and destroyed illegally to build luxury housing and resorts. For example project Esencia.
Staying a colony will only create a Puerto Rico without Puerto Ricans.

Yisela, an Unidos Artist & choreographer, is casting dancers for a paid summer project inspired by the dance style of Michael Jackson.

This high-energy ensemble piece will require performers to attend five rehearsals, one dress rehearsal, and be available for the final performance on July 12.

REQUIREMENTS: Dancers must be 18 or older, have reliable transportation, and have prior performance experience in styles such as Hip Hop, Jazz, or Latin dance.
