Happy New Year!
Wondering how Germans celebrate New Year's eve? Called Silvester, the evening is filled with festivals, fireworks, live music, and fun! Making a lot of noise has always been a part of this "turning of the calendar year" and it is believed that is where the Fireworks came in - unlike in the states, most Fireworks are legal in Germany and there are very few public fireworks displays.
Another tradition is Bleigiessen, melting a small metal figure and then pouring the molten metal into a cup of cold water - the resulting shape is said to tell you something about the new year ahead.
Small gifts are often given and in the spirit of bringing good luck in the new year, lucky charms in the form of horseshoes, pigs, clover and ladybugs and sometimes exchanged.
However its celebrated, we wish you a happy new year or a "good slide" into 2025: Wir wünschen einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr.
