ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Pamela Powers Thompson is a native of McDowell County, WV, and began working
with colors and patterns at age eleven while earning a Girl Scout sewing badge. It
wasn’t until high school that she found her interest in drawing and painting. She creates
with a variety of paints, pencils, and textiles. Recently, she painted murals on the
electrical transmission tower cement bases for the town of Bramwell. She graduated
with an associate degree in Interior Decoration from Fairmont College in 1980. Wanting a more child-friendly schedule, she earned an Art Education Degree in 1996. Pam began her teaching career in Taylor County WV and finished in Lexington High School, NC. She has an Etsy shop selling her artwork, textiles, and refashioned clothing.
“I grew up in the country, where my grandmother and parents taught me to love nature through their gardens and time outdoors. My mother also taught me to sew at a young age, sparking my appreciation for patterns, textures, and handmade detail. Nature’s calm reminds me of our small
but meaningful place in this beautiful world, and that feeling guides my work. Inspired by Monet and the Impressionists, I’m drawn to vivid color, movement, and spontaneity. Plants and flowers appear often in my art, echoing the plants and flower bulbs I’ve carried with me from my mother’s and grandmother’s gardens. Recreating them keeps their memory close and honors
the beauty they passed down to me.”
