Being a goalkeeper and being a CEO have more in common than most people realize.

As a goalkeeper, you're the last line of defense. You see the entire field, anticipate challenges before they happen, communicate constantly, and stay focused under pressure. Every save matters.

As a CEO, I find myself doing many of the same things.

I have the privilege of seeing the bigger picture for Team Building Unlimited-looking ahead, identifying opportunities, navigating obstacles, and helping our team and clients succeed. Sometimes that means making tough decisions. Sometimes it means stepping up when things don't go according to plan. Most importantly, it means helping others perform at their best.

At Team Building Unlimited, our goal isn't simply to create fun events. We help organizations strengthen communication, collaboration, trust, accountability, and leadership through meaningful experiences that bring people together.

Just like a goalkeeper can't win a match alone, no organization succeeds because of one person.

The strongest teams communicate, trust each other, and work toward something bigger than themselves.

That's where the magic happens.

It's time to clear up this misconception once and for all.
One lesson I've learned after years of working with teams is this:
Not every team activity creates a stronger team.
Bowling, sporting events, axe throwing, and happy hours can be fun. They give people a chance to socialize and enjoy time together. There's absolutely a place for that.
But when the goal is to improve collaboration, communication, trust, accountability, and problem-solving, the activity itself matters.
The most impactful team experiences place people in situations where they must rely on each other, solve challenges together, navigate different perspectives, and discover strengths they didn't know existed within their team.
The real value isn't what happens during the event. It's what people learn about each other while they are working toward a shared goal.
I've watched teams uncover communication gaps, recognize hidden leaders, improve trust, and leave with a stronger understanding of what makes them successful together.
When choosing a team-building experience, ask yourself:
"Will this simply entertain our team for a few hours, or will it help us become a better team when we return to work tomorrow?"
The best team-building activities do both.

Most teams spend so much time focused on “what’s next” that they stop being fully present with the people standing right beside them.

The strongest teams aren’t built someday.

They’re built Here. Now.

In the conversations we slow down enough to have.

In the support we offer each other during pressure.

In the laughter, trust, accountability, and human connection that happen in real time.

That’s why purposeful play and meaningful team experiences matter. They pull people out of autopilot and remind them how to connect again-not just as coworkers, but as people working toward something together.

Because culture is never built later.

It’s built in the moments happening right in front of us.

Somewhere along the way, work became a calendar contest. Back-to-back meetings.

“Quick touch bases.”

Weekly check-ins that somehow need 14 people on the invite. Brainstorm sessions that could have been three bullet points in an email.

And while everyone is sitting in conference rooms talking about the work… the actual work is piling up quietly at their desks.

We have created a culture where being busy often looks more valuable than being productive.

The truth?

Too many meetings don’t create momentum. They create exhaustion. People leave mentally drained, behind on deadlines, overwhelmed by constant interruptions, and frustrated because they can’t focus long enough to actually think deeply, solve problems, or create meaningful progress.

Not every conversation needs a meeting.
Not every update needs an hour.
And not every person needs to be in the room.

The most effective teams are not the ones who meet the most. They are the ones who communicate clearly, trust each other, and respect each other’s time.

Great leaders know the difference between collaboration and clutter. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your team is cancel the meeting.

Give people space to think.
Space to create.
Space to focus.
Space to breathe.

Because innovation rarely happens in “The Bored Room.”

It happens when talented people actually have the time and energy to do the work that matters.

Water has a funny way of teaching us things.
When you’re underwater, you realize pretty quickly what matters most… breathing room.
Teams need that too.
Not just pressure.
Not just productivity.
Not just another meeting.
Connection. Energy. Trust. Laughter.
Moments that remind people they’re human before they’re employees.
That’s often where the best teamwork begins.
Sometimes a little purposeful play is exactly what keeps a team afloat.

There’s something powerful about connecting with high school students and reminding them that “NO” isn’t the end of their story.
The rejection. The setback.
The thing that didn’t go their way.
Sometimes the very thing they think is holding them back… is actually shaping who they’re about to become.
I love challenging students to stop fearing “no” and start using it as fuel to ask bigger questions, take more chances, and keep showing up anyway.
Because one “yes” can change everything.

You have to celebrate your wins and put the hard work in as well! After giving my TEDx Talk yesterday, I made a cheers to my courage and ability to do it. Then this morning I hit the gym again to nurture myself to help insure I continue at my best!
