Last night at parachute reminded me why song choice is everything.

The record that said it all: Dexter Wansel, “The Sweetest Pain,” Philadelphia International, 1979. That is the kind of selection that rewards a room full of people who came to listen; warm, grown, and built for a real sound system. Pulling the right record at the right moment is the whole job, and a night like this is where that work gets to breathe.

The setup did its part too; Technics SL-1200MK7s, a Varia RDM40 rotary mixer, and McIntosh running the room. When the equipment is intentional and the selection is intentional, the music stops being background and becomes the reason everyone is there.

Thank you to everyone who came out for GRUVZ and shared the booth energy with me and Paul Scrabblor Fitzgerald. Deep records, rich sound, good food and drink, and a room that stayed locked in all night.

During COVID a lot of us bought DJ controllers with the best intentions and life happened. They’re sitting in a closet, on a shelf, collecting dust.

I’m asking you to let them have a second life.

I’m preparing the second iteration of Listening as a Luxury, my DJ and music education course launching in Uptown, and the babies in this class are going to need equipment to work with. If you have a controller you’re not using and want it to go somewhere it will actually matter, I would love to receive it as a donation or gift for the program.

This studio is where the curriculum lives. The kids deserve the same intentionality you see in this room.

If you have something to contribute or know someone who does, please reach out to me directly. Every device donated goes straight into the hands of a student who is learning that music is a skill, a craft, and a career.

I shot this one at my studio desk, glass in hand, thinking about what it really means to gather people. That is exactly what Lux Is Love at Big Marsh Park is built to do.

This season we are adding a mocktail component, because real hospitality leaves no one out.

Picture jazzy, soulful curation drifting across one of the South Side’s most beautiful natural spaces; every age, every background, every preference welcome. Bring the family, bring your people, bring the dog. Sip a thoughtful mocktail, take in the trails and wetlands, and let the music become the architecture of the room we are building outdoors.

Sound as hospitality; a living room for culture, set against the nature of Big Marsh. And to the DJs and musicians in our community: come experience the room firsthand. This is what we are building more of, and we want you in it.

In under two weeks we’ve lost Rob Base, Sonny Rollins, Foster Sylvers, Dexter Wansel, and now Peabo Bryson. Hip-hop, jazz, Philly soul, R&B; that isn’t one genre grieving, that’s the whole family tree.

The music stays. Give thanks 🙏🏽💕🤲🏽
