Jazz Record Art Collective presents Interlace performing Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers' 1963 live recording UGETSU on Thursday, July 17 at Fulton Street Collective.

The evening will feature live painting from visual artist Julian Camacho.

"Birdland, NYC June 16, 1963...The most famous jazz club in the world has a capacity of just 98. Those fortunate enough to have attended that night were treated to an incredible performance by Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers. Although it was Blakey who inaugurated the “Live At Birdland” genre of albums (which has grown to over 100 individual titles by now), Ugetsu proved to be his third and final recording there. I must say, they went out in style...Blakey was one of the finest drummers in jazz, but it was the people he surrounded himself with who were the real story. Blakey’s Jazz Messengers were always the cream of the crop. Much like it was with Miles Davis, a stint with Blakey could be considered something of a graduate course in musicianship...Right from the top, the band is on fire. The great Cedar Walton’s piano opens up “One By One,” the horns of Curtis Fuller (trombone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), and Wayne Shorter (sax) state the theme — then Blakey himself pounds a nice little drum break, opening the song up for a fine Shorter solo. Holding it all together is the rock-solid bass of Reggie Workman....Art Blakey’s status as a jazz legend was already set in stone when this album was recorded, so it is really no surprise just how good it is. But it truly is a powerhouse performance, from a band who together and individually would continue to shape the course of music for decades to come. Ugetsu is the real deal, folks — seriously cool beatnik-coffeehouse jazz for your pleasure."

Jazz Record Art Collective presents Raíces performing Cal Tjader's 1964 release SOUL SAUCE Wednesday March 26th at Fulton Street Collective.

The evening will feature live painting from visual artist Arthur Wright.

Raíces (Roots) pays homage to the originators of Latin Jazz and performs original music in the same style. The release of their debut, self-titled album was well-received and earned the quintet a featured spot at the 2023 Chicago Latin Jazz Festival. Raíces was modeled on the famous Cal Tjader Quintet of the 1950's & 60's by the late Chicago percussionist Rubén Alvarez and is now led by vibraphonist Joe Sonnefeldt.

"Soul Sauce is one of the highlights from Tjader's catalog with its appealing mixture of mambo, samba, bolero, and boogaloo styles... an album full of smart arrangements, subtly provocative vibe solos, and intricate percussion backing."
~Stephen Cook

Jazz Record Art Collective presents Constantine Alexander's FIRETET performing Freddie Hubbard's 1961 release HUB CAP and Hubbard's 1962 release THE ARTISTRY OF FREDDIE HUBBARD; on Wednesday, October 23rd at 8pm.

The evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA.

HUB CAP
"From Hubbard's opening solo on the flying, boppish title track, which crackles with his trademark urgency, crisp, flaring sound and hell-for-leather attack, the music throws you back into a jazz era when the muscular dynamism of hard-bop was at the sharp end of a still commercially popular jazz."
~John Fordham

ARTISTRY
"This 1962 effort was Freddie Hubbard's first recording under his own name for Impulse!...Hubbard's shimmering style and clear tone show a clear debt to the late Clifford Brown and a nod to the bold sonic curiosity of John Coltrane. These are some hot young players pushing a classic format forward.

Jazz Record Art Collective

The Jazz Record Art Collective (JRAC) is a live music series directed by Chris Anderson, hosted by the Fulton Street Collective. Each show features a new line-up of Chicago musicians performing a reinterpretation of an iconic or influential jazz record. As the series has developed, the forum has opened up for the band leader to educate the audience on the performed record. As one fan put it: “it’s like taking a 75-minute class in one jazz record, complete with a live performance.” The series also showcases select visual artists who simultaneously create new work in response to the performance.
