We lovingly remember our dear friend, neighbor, and member of the Anna Held family, Douglas Young, gone suddenly and too soon.
Douglas was a resident of Edgewater for over 20 years, chasing his dreams out of Kokomo, Indiana and into Chicago. He was an active participant of our community, embodying the consistency, enthusiasm and integrity of someone you could always rely on. He participated in the world for the world, advocating a better society for all and was a champion to those less fortunate.
Doug was quick witted, sharp and carried a wicked sense of humor, always accompanied by a playful wink. His joy permeated those around him. He was an avid supporter and collector of the arts and promoted original work in every form.
For decades, Doug helped me raise children in a retail store, grabbing a phone, delivery or baby without hesitation. He would routinely walk into the shop as the unexpected sweet relief, ready to walk the dog, load the van or simply offer help wherever it was needed. Countless days he’d arrive with bags of sandwiches, chips, salads, lunch for all. I remember the day he introduced me as his sister; it was like a badge of honor.
Douglas was fearless, brave, generous and ever-present. He was a good listener, storyteller and confidant. We will miss Doug more than words can say, but for now I just want thank him for his company and kindness: his legacy. There is solace in knowing people like Doug exist in the world, so lovingly and willfully, and that we were lucky enough to know him and call him one of ours. In the wake of his departure, his absence is immeasurable. There will never be another like him.
A celebration of life will be at Tweet - 5020 N Sheridan Rd in Chicago - May 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00
