The Billboard Top 40 just went rap-free for the first time in 35 years.
This follows the departure of Kendrick and SZA’s “luther” from the chart this week after 46 weeks total... 13 of those at No. 1.
This isn’t about talent or creativity drying up. Billboard’s recurrent rules automatically remove songs that have charted for 26+ weeks and fall below No. 25—which is exactly what happened to “luther.” But it does mark a shift in how rap is performing commercially compared to five years ago.
Producers: this is your moment. The lane is wide open. What comes next could be up to you!
