‘Ring Of Fire’: Today’s Solar Eclipse Will Give Millions A Unique View
Not everyone will be treated to the big celestial show.
‘Ring Of Fire’: Today’s Solar Eclipse Will Give Millions A Unique View
Giphy

About six months ago, a total solar eclipse seemed to capture everyone’s attention. But a celestial event occurring today hasn’t attracted nearly as much attention despite its stunning characteristics.

What is an annular eclipse?

Named for the ring-shaped “annulus” that appears around the moon, today’s annular eclipse won’t produce the trademark daytime darkness of a total eclipse — but it is a sight to behold.

Like any solar eclipse, this variation happens when the Earth, moon, and sun are in alignment, causing the moon to block much of the sun’s light. While a solar eclipse blocks all sunlight and a partial eclipse only covers a portion of the sun, today’s annular eclipse displays a thin ring of light glowing around the moon.

As Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Carolyn Sumners, what separates it from a total eclipse is that “the moon is just not quite big enough to cover the sun.”

Those in its direct path can expect to see either a red or yellow glow peeking out from behind the moon.

Where can you see it?

A direct view of the annular eclipse will be limited to areas in Argentina, Chile, and Easter Island, but a partial eclipse can be seen across much of the world — including Hawaii and regions of Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

As with any solar eclipse, those interested in taking a gander at the sky should ensure that they are using appropriate eye protection. Glasses created specifically for viewing eclipses are capable of removing UV light, which can cause serious eye injuries and vision loss.

Scientists say annular eclipses are fairly uncommon, showing up somewhere on Earth about every year or two. This one happens to come on the heels of a partial lunar eclipse that coincided with last month’s harvest moon.
