How do I know so much about the history of house music? Because I was there, I am the Midnite Son. I’m a DJ, and I’ve been part of the house music scene since its inception. I remember a time when disco was on the way out, and hip hop was on the way in. The black DJs were looking for a way to keep people dancing after disco died out. They started sampling songs from other genres, like soul and jazz, and then adding their own beats and loops. The result was a new sound that was both familiar and exciting. House music quickly caught on, and it's been a popular genre ever since. It's a testament to the creativity and innovation of Black DJs that they were able to create something so new and lasting. Black DJs were struggling to find their place in this changing musical landscape. Some of us tried mixing pop music or hip hop, while others experimented with soul and jazz. It was black DJs who were fusing familiar lyrics from soul songs with jazz and repetitive loops who created the genre that would become known as house music. By taking familiar songs that the crowd knew and mixing them in a new and exciting way, they were able to draw people to the dance floor. House music is a unique and vibrant musical genre that has its roots in the Black American experience. It’s a music that has a "spirit" for dancing, and it has the power to bring people together.
