On Sunday Mangel Florist had the great pleasure to share the podium with Shawn Fiedler at a Fourth Presbyterian adult education class on the use of flowers in worship. Shawn brilliantly surveyed the theology, while we spoke about iconography and symbolism, both in the church and beyond: the association of the lily with the Virgin Mary (see Botticelli here), the rose as a token of silence in Greek mythology (hence, “sub rosa”), Oscar Wilde’s passion for callas, Dior’s devotion to the lily of the valley, and so much more. Such a fascinating history…and a lovely morning. 🙏
