The age of the internet isn’t my thing and a major reason I opened the brick and mortar 4 years ago TODAY!! I often question posting to this echo chamber. I feel conflicted and push against it mostly and then it pushes against me and my posts are less visible haha. But here I am feeling called to declare where I stand on the internet.
I’m a small business owner and I prioritize welcoming everyone into my space (irl and virtual) to engage with flowers. When there aren’t any growing around us in the winter, when you’re stuck at home with an illness, when you’re friend is dying and you want her to see something beautiful before she passes, when you fu**ed up but really love your partner, because peonies were your Dad’s favorite, because you had a dumb day and want to treat yourself, when your kiddo is in the school play, to honor the life of your grandma, because it’s their birthday, all of this to celebrate love and connect with each other.
The life of a small business owner is grueling. I had no idea it would be this hard! I question what the heck I’m doing on a daily basis, maybe we all do? But I can’t see myself doing anything else that fills me the way floristry does (at least within capitalism). Floristry is taxing on the body, it’s high pressure, unpredictable work but it honors our existence, and the fleeting nature of all of it. Connecting with each of you by way of flowers is the spice of my life. Allowing me to be a part of these meaningful moments in your life is a privilege. I believe our individual and collective identities are a gift and respecting one another’s identities is our duty. We’re all human and this existence is absolutely gorgeous and nuanced and insanely unfair and painful. I’m just a florist, I’m just a small business owner, but I recognize my privilege and I believe people who are in a place of privilege should stand up and speak out. Exfolia stands with immigrants. We reject authoritarianism, ice raids and deportation. We do not support a system that is based on biased and unequal power and economic structures. We see our shared humanity and act on that principle. Power to the People. 🖤
