Please welcome Carol Carrier at plantmasters to the Q+A! Carol, along with her husband Leon and their son Lee run their 2nd generation flower farm in Howard and Montgomery counties. Lee oversees the day to day operations, field & greenhouse crops and farm markets. Carol tries to stay on top of their participation in the Chesapeake Flower Exchange, keep the books and be their customer liaison. Leon, who has the horticulture degree, is the master seed starter and propagation talent.
Since they operate sales all year, it's hard to pick a specialty so here's a few: lilacs, peonies, dahlias, chrysanthemums and winterberry. They also grow annuals, herbs and houseplants for our farmers markets. Plant Masters attend the Montgomery Farm Women's Cooperative Market in Bethesda, Bethesda Central Farm Market also in Bethesda, Kensington Farmers Market, the Olney Farmers and Artists Market and Columbia Heights in Washington DC.
🌸 What piece of advice would you give to a beginning flower farmer?
As a beginning flower farmer it is tempting to do all the things. I'd suggest growing into your expansion and doing it as debt free as possible. We always made a point to take a vacation too because burn out is real.
🌸 What's your favorite season on the farm and why?
It's hard to pick a favorite season and it's certainly changed over time. Spring is the exciting time, new things constantly coming into bloom, so much to accomplish in a finite amount of time all while dealing with sometimes challenging weather. Also when lilacs and peonies bloom so I guess spring is my season.
🌸 If your flowers had personalities, which one would be the most dramatic and why?
The flower with the mostest personality, diva of the hoop house are the football mums. Sometimes called magnums and just like that name suggests, they are big boys. We grow white and yellow varieties. Their fall blooms are particularly welcome after the dahlias have passed. Football mums are a focal flower and catch your attention. My MIL was from the generation when your beau would send you a corsage for the big game and the best ones were made with football mums. They have an area of Japan where they are prized, yet are a hardy flower with great vase life. Can't ask for much more!
