Going through reams of old paperwork and feeding a shredder while waiting for prom goers. I found this tucked within. If I’m not mistaken, taken by and gifted to me by a great neighbor, John Bulokowski.
From a window display at the old shop probably early nineties.

It’s been very busy with bargain shoppers around here lately, and I think that’s wonderful. The extra 50% off the holiday related items has been very well received and smart on the part of the shoppers. Particularly the Christmas things. Most faux greenery is either vinyl or plastic of some sort. Both rely very heavily on oil for production, and oil having doubled (by the barrel) will make things being made now very expensive come Fall. If you’re on the fence about something now you may regret investing a small sum now as apposed to eye popping prices later. We’re seeing big increases in shipping already, and have had visitors come back for some item they later decided they should have to find it gone. I’m afraid that’s how these things work.
We’re also seeing smaller retailers make off with collections of containers, bottles, candles, wreaths, etc. in light of being able to pick an assembly of things in singles or small quantities with no shipping as opposed to wholesale quantities with expensive freight. Smart strategy in a weak economy.
For whatever reason you’ve come in to help us lighten the load, or just have a look, we certainly appreciate it. I’ve been replenishing as fast as I can to keep it fresh. You are welcome to come and look, whether you’re a longtime customer or you’ve never before been in. Doesn’t matter. The sale and normal business will continue as usual (minus big events, too risky under circumstances) until such time our new proprietors are in place.
Yes, we’re here for Mother’s Day and for prom season. Hope to see you soon. Have a nice weekend!

This is an amazing thing. My mother and business partner at one of our many Holiday Open Houses. Amazing, because despite being a beautiful woman. My mother *hated* having her picture taken. We worked together for thirty plus years and I cannot really think of better picture of the two of us. I had never seen it before last week when it was shared to me here. She was primarily my bookkeeper, official Title “Countess de Money’”. , but she would jump in whenever and wherever needed.
I had mentioned earlier that dad was instrumental in helping start the business. There was no one more responsible for keeping it going year after year than Betty.. when we lost her to a second bout with breast cancer nearly twenty years ago now, I seriously questioned how we would go on, and truly if I really wanted to go on without her. It was a hard time. All she did regarding deposits, taxes, budgeting, bills. I wasn’t sure I was up to it all. But we had weddings and other things booked that needed to be done. So we had just a day or two to absorb the shock and move on. I miss her still. She wasn’t just “mom”, we were best friends, business partners, and was my most trusted advisor. An excellent human being with a huge fan club. Her loss was monumental, but I knew that the only option she’d approve was for us to pick up and move on. To find a way, as she had so many times. I was blessed with some really exceptional helpers around this time, and it is the husband of one Donna Sharko, Glenn, who captured her spirit so beautifully. Thank you, Glenn. This is priceless to me.

First, a well deserved “woah!” for the amazing response to yesterday’s post. Amazing in the physical response, the great numbers of you who made your way out to peruse the sale PLUS the number of “adoptions” and the sales created. Unexpected and deeply, deeply appreciated. Yes, cheap, but not in the landfill when still perfectly fine and usable. Win-win.
But aside from great pleasure of seeing so many of you, the completely unforeseen messages of prayer and praise for our simply being here for you or your family. What we consider just doing our job. The dozens of lovely messages that I’ve tried to keep up with, but when there are many messages Facebook will hide or shift the order making it really tough to see them all. If I missed answering you, it’s not intentional. There were times I’d be working on reading and responding that I had to stop. It can’t be denied, there is a sadness to all of this that can’t be ignored and your messages of love and support touch me deeply.
Again, thank you, for all of it, the acceptance, the patronage, the trust and understanding displayed by this customer family of ours for nearly five decades cannot be underestimated. The rough patches, financially and personally, that we’ve weathered together. The phenomenon of business,/customer relations built on helping and supporting each other is an accidental gold star model for business success.
Be good to me, and I’ll be good to you.
Sounds simple, but easier in theory than practice. And we all need practice.
Again, thank you all. And if you think you missed out because the hoards stripped us bare like locusts. Fear not! I have four floors and a barns worth of storage. There’s still plenty to peruse and I haven’t brought everything out yet, so come say hi if you’re in the neighborhood. We are not closed or closing anytime soon. In fact, I prefer to remain until I find a suitable replacement and make the transition as easy as possible.

I had a pretty frank discussion with my neurologist today during treatment. There was some backslide last treatment which I had attributed to the fairly grueling schedule (at least partially self imposed) starting with Valentine’s Day and the amount of “factory work” posture I find nearly impossible to avoid. I had asked the good doctor if this scenario could reduce the effects of the already marginal success with the Botox shots. (I have cervical Dystonia). He heartily concurred with my suspicions.
Long story short I need to back away from repetitive motion, so we both need to hang up our knives and pass the baton to someone else who will continue the nearly fifty year Chesterfield Floral legacy. I seek a successor who will will enjoy growing and changing with the whims of fashion as we have.
In aid of all that, the serious purging and unloading of stock I began some months ago continues, with some increased urgency. I completely understand how for many it doesn’t really feel like a time for splurging but I am offering what’s out at significantly less than wholesale and, BTW, a hearty thank you to the many who have came and taken advantage.
I’m now offering another fifty percent off the already discounted price on anything holiday related. I also encourage anyone who was on the fence with the price of any item you may have passed up (that is still around) to make me an offer. I want as much of this stock gone as possible before I offer to show the building to any perspective buyers.
And there has been interest, which is good, wonderful actually. I’m also happy to see that the General Store appears to have a new owner. Best wishes to whoever has taken that project on. The Inn looks wonderful too in its freshened state and new colors. It’s a good time for a change. Anyone worried about a shaky economy should remember this business was started in 1979, not exactly a shining economic era.

This is a post intended for the business page which has many more followers, but, for whatever Facebook reason, that page has disappeared into the ether. I had shared on my personal page instead.
aaand it’s back… I found it in a category for pages scheduled for deletion.
Wonderful 🙄

Dad has been gone a year today. There is no one more responsible for the creation of Chesterfield Floral Co. It was a very straightforward affair. “Do you want to buy the old firehouse?” And that’s how it all began, with the purchase of the old Chesterfield Hose Co. for 15K, 1978 if memory serves me. Here he is in the area of the “new” shop where the plants are. It was a major undertaking that he couldn’t help inserting his considerable skill and creativity into once again. He lived for projects and i inherited that trait from him. Challenge accepted! Happier, but not healthier times. It was around this time that my co-florist and bookkeeper mom had her first bout with breast cancer. Mid nineties. I miss them both terribly, but know they would be last ones to allow me to dwell with sorrow. Love you both…
