Once again this year, our finisher awards for Night Train have been crafted by Candy Kemp and Turtle to Goat Creations. She is an Army veteran, friend and fellow Band of Runners participant. The magnets are laser etched and wood finished. We used a different color finish this year so the awards will look different than last year.

Since I mentioned Band of Runners, camp registration remains open. If you are a veteran or family member, please apply for this free opportunity.

Our quest to hit as many historical sites as possible in 2026 continued with a personal twist today.

On the morning of May 31st, 2007, I awoke to the news that Flipper 75 had been shot down. I was one of two Chinook units in Afghanistan at that time. The heroes on Flipper 75 were guys we had flown missions with and repaired aircraft together at Bagram. The airframe (tail number 644) was an aircraft I had crewed many times.

Brent Przychoda was our standards pilot in Afghanistan. He was responsible for all of our training. After a bad accident in 2022, he took his own life in 2023.

All are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Today, Luz and the kids made the journey with me to visit their sites. We also witnessed a wreath ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown and visited Arlington House. It was a great day, but a hard one.

Shirt order for Night Train go in Monday. If you have been on the fence, please get registered. Historically, I get 30% of my registrations for the event in the last 3 weeks. While that is a great thing, it also presents a logistical challenge. Go on ahead and get registered this weekend.

Why is Dan showing me a television screen? Has he lost his mind?

Well, maybe.

For the last 4 years, we have projected results off of a Walmart brand tv. When the weather was bad, the tv went away.

We made a major upgrade with an all weather outdoor television purchase. This is built to withstand rain and high temperatures (like for Night Train).

This television also has 2000 Nits, which means it can be easily seen in direct sunlight. This is a huge help for both our events, and the events we time.

High Bridge Challenge registration has been extended until Night Train.

Registering for the Challenge puts runners in both Night Train and the December Freight Train. Upon successful completion of the two distances, runners receive a unique award. Signing up for the Challenge also gives a discount to the participant.

Those individuals that ran Freight Train in May only need to complete Night Train in June to finish the Challenge (unless they ran Night Train in 2015).

Let’s go over some of the volunteer opportunities for Night Train.

🚚-For the last couple of months, I have been dealing with torn ligaments in my right wrist as well as carpal tunnel syndrome in both arms. Loading and unloading the trucks sets my arms on fire. I would love to have help Friday afternoon/evening loading the truck and Sunday morning unloading it at my house. This is a volunteer opportunity in Chesterfield. I am happy to pay if a teenager wants help or provide volunteer credits.

🏁- We also need help at the start finish line. The majority of these opportunities are from 6-10pm and 10pm-2:30am.

🌆- We could use some help at our downtown aid station from 10pm-2am. 1-2 more people is enough

Finally, we need help at our Tuggle aid station. Shifts run from 6:30-10:30 and 10:30-1am.

James River Returns for Year 5!

You gave us the feedback and we acted on it. James River returns for year 5 on April 10, 2027. We are bringing a new course. The Taylor Pond loop has been removed. We have replaced it with a loop around the picnic area at Canoe Landing Campground. This loop near the end of the course is much easier to follow. It also allows the secondary aid station to be closer to the middle.

James River is easily the most beautiful course I have. It features a variety of terrains. We have big Mountain View’s and hilly singletrack. All of this is capped by a stunning 3 mile stretch along the river.

All options return. The No DNF feature returns. The night 10 Miler will be a fantastic option for people who want to see the stars.

This weekend I get to go camping with my family. The kids are excited and it looks like a great weekend. I am a lucky man. In more ways than one.

But I’ll spend a little bit of time remembering those who didn’t make it and the purpose of Memorial Day. The list is long of those to remember.

We will go dark for the weekend and just leave this post up. I hope you have a great weekend with your loved ones.

In late 2025, we began using Racecheck as means to allow runners to offer feedback on our events.

They have a simple to use format that provides us with a lot of useful information. The other great feature is that those reviews get imbedded into our webpage, allowing potential participants to see the feedback.

Could it open us to 0 bombs or negative reviews? Sure. Our style of events is not for everyone. And in any event, there are always things we can improve on. But reading through the reviews also gives a sense of the kind of events we direct. For those of you who are trying to bring new folks into the trails, share those reviews with your friends. Because High Bridge is a day use trail, most people never get to experience the magic of the bridge and park at night. In June, you are liable to see thousands of fireflies as you cross the bridge. You also get to cross the bridge under the moonlight. These views and experiences have made Night Train our signature race. We are just one month away. Will you be there?
