Paintings and sculptures like these were often commissioned by the wealthy upper class of the 16th Century. They viewed the pastoral life as idyllic often comparing it to poetic literature about nature. The innocence of rural life seemed to be a blessing in comparison to the harsh conditions of city life. In reality, many were seeking an escape from the reality of a country torn by constant strife.
