WELL WELL WELL, my little hot takes have gone viral.

Hello to our new followers and a few new haters (sorry, I just really hate fake candles, okay?)

I am Helen Elyse Row, owner and principal planner of Sonder Event Co.

Sonder means “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.” This company was started with the belief that everyone's experience should be considered - every vendor, every guest.

A few things about me:

1. I started this company after years of working in the wedding industry on the weekends while working in advertising full-time.
2. I have a degree in PR, a minor in events management, and yes, I took multiple wedding planning classes in college.
3. I was a dancer my whole life and now teach ballet part-time at the studio I grew up in.
4. I was a flower girl more times than I can count...my love for weddings was instilled at a very young age.
5. HATE to brag, but I ran an awards show (pictured here) directly following Hamilton and was told by the AV crew I ran a show better than the "best."
6. I am the board advisor of the Advertising Club of Richmond, on the Fur Ball Committee for the Richmond SPCA, and the Lead of Friends of Patrick Henry Park because I love volunteering and hate sleeping.
7. I have predicted divorces down to the month, so if I don't FEEL like you are in love, I won't book ya.
8. I have a lot of ~lore~ which slips out in conversation, but it has led to me being extremely empathetic and understanding with my clients - chronically ill, grieving, navigating trauma? I end up knowing so much about my clients, which allows me to show up for them during the complexities of wedding planning.
8. My favorite color is black. 95% of my closet is black. I will use black in design as much as I can.
9. I am from Richmond, VA. You'll hear me tell stories about a few venues that were once abandoned buildings I used to sneak into or sit on the roofs of...
10. I LOVE love. I LOVE what I do. I LOVE working with incredible, creative, talented people. This is my dream realized, and I will never take that for granted.

Yesterday, on a call, Cindy of said green is both trendy and timeless.

We LOVE color. We LOVE black and white. And of course we LOVE green.

We love designing FOR our clients. We are able to step into different aesthetics, create different vibes, and serve many different clients. It's about our taste for you - and sometimes that means sticking to the classics.

WARNING: Contents are hot (takes)!

1. Nothing makes your wedding look cheap like buying cheap. Time and time again, we see couples buy DIY decor to “save money.” Well, they end up spending money on…trash…when they could have had a few gorgeous flowers. The last few “DIY” or “do it cheap” weddings we coordinated had a higher total spend than a really lovely wedding at a nice venue with limited decor.

Oh, and all that wedding stuff doesn’t always resell…

Hire a planner to design and keep you within budget. It is a larger amount up front, but it saves you so much money in the long run.

2. Don’t invite people you don’t like or don’t trust to behave at your wedding. At this point, most of the vendors we work with have extensive harassment clauses, and the venue will kick out a belligerent drunk. Only invite people who are truly happy for you and will act accordingly. The day is about you, not them.

3. Enough said. Your person loves YOU.

4. The number one indicator of divorce, y’all.

5. I say it all the time - it’s never a bridezilla, always a nightmare mom. This isn’t her day, it’s yours. And if she doesn’t want to lose her “baby boy,” we’ll refer her to a therapist.

Our contract and third-party payment amendment protect us and your day from a mother wanting to make it her own…or cancel the whole thing (yes, we’ve had that happen before, hehe).

6. Fake candles look FAKE. If the venue doesn’t allow candles (be sure to read the contract before booking), we’ll use lamps or alternative lighting. We don’t do fake, and you’ll thank us for it when you see the photos.

7. Real vendors with real contracts and real insurance only. No explanation needed.

8. There’s no such thing as bad clients, only people who don’t want to get married. We try not to book couples who seem resentful of the process. We work with the madly in love only. We’ve learned that if they don’t want this, our job is nearly impossible. Couples ready to spend their lives together are always the best clients. If they’re excited to get married, they’re excited to choose napkins, select vendors, and celebrate on the day of!

This PERFECT day was PUBLISHED!

Scout and Beau's day was one of our favorites of ALL time. This was the first and only time we were hired before the engagement. They knew what they wanted, and they got it!

Scout had a vision for her day, which we brought to life with an incredible team of vendors.

This wedding is a prime example of how, when you work with a planner (preferably us), you have someone who can take your Pinterest boards and make them a reality through refining your hopes and dreams and making strategic choices to create "the look" within your budget...or maybe just a little bit over. We NEEDED the bistro lights, okay?

This day was filled with love and laughter. This couple and their people allowed us to lead, which resulted in the bride's mother thanking us for seeing her daughter calmer than she had ever seen her. The vendors showed up, showed out, and worked together seamlessly. The guests danced the night away in the center of the VMFA...oh, and ate donuts, lots and lots of donuts.

This day was one for the books, and we are thrilled to have it in print.
