80s+90s R&B Deep Cuts
Saturday• June 20th • 9pm - 12am
Host Selector: DJ She’s A+
A. P. ❤🌺🌻 | Twin Flame DJs

What’s her relationship with music?
“I’ve loved music since I was a small child (can remember singing After 7’s “Ready or Not” at the top of my lungs when I was 5), so Stylus’ DJs and staff who have a deep knowledge and love for music of all types connects with me.”

What’s inspiring her right now?
“Music and artists who are doing a callback to early 90s popular Soulful/Deep House music that got a lot of radio play (think Cece Pen*ston, Robin S.).

Artists like ROCHELLE JORDAN jsilos | music producer “KKAAYYTTRRAA”

Songs in this vein that I’m jamming:
Doing It Too - Rochelle Jordan
Thong & Oh La La - Justine Skye
DO IT! (AGAIN!) - KAYTRANADA”

What’s the inspiration for her set?
“Mixtapes we made by hitting record at the EXACT right time to capture our favorite songs on the radio to cassettes, for posterity. 90s and early 2000s house parties, where the “aux cord” was our cassette and CD collections, played on the boombox or multi-disc changer.”

DRELLZ

What’s his connection to music?
“I’m a long time DJ with an insatiable appetite for music discovery. I’m drawn to outlets like Stylus that create space for thoughtful music curation. Anywhere that art is discovered and shared is a place I can find community.“

What’s inspiring him right now?
“Any given day, I’m vibing to anything that UK producer
is connected to: SAULT michaelkiwanuka Ja Cleo Sol

What’s he bringing to the lounge?
“Musicians across the African diaspora created signature versions of jazz, funk, disco and house by applying traditional percussive polyrhythms and rolling grooves. The stamps they placed on these genres is unmistakable.  Acute listeners will find the common thread. It’s a musical journey worth exploring and celebrating.”

Golden Era Reggae
Wednesday • June 3rd • 8pm - 11pm
Host Selector: DJ Tanner Danny
| Vinyl Collector

What’s his connection to music?
“Record collector for 20 years or so. Life-long listener of reggae music, Jamaican music. Been djing with records for over a decade, mostly in New Orleans. Normally, I play a lot of funk & disco in my sets but reggae is my one true love, and the genre I’m most passionate about.“

What’s inspiring him right now?
“That’s tough. The past week I’ve been listening to a lot of Cal Tjader, Herbie Hancock, James Booker, Prince, Outkast, and G. Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” I can’t stop listening to that song, and love when the synth arpeggio thing comes in. Oh, and reggae, of course.“

What’s he bringing to the lounge?
“There is an entire world of reggae music that boomed in the late 70s and early 80s that is overlooked. These makers of these golden era reggae tracks understood the formula of what made reggae work, and executed it perfectly. This is reggae at the height of the Jamaican recording scene, as well. The production by producers like the Scientist is top-notch, and the songs will showcase the Jamaican sound of the 1980s before the introduction of Midi sounds and dancehall elements. I will also play some ska, rocksteady, and more modern artists that work in the roots reggae tradition.”
