Back in 2016 when we opened our first retail store, there was a very particular “Aha moment” we experienced…and that is the ability to curate and display what we do.

In hindsight it seems so simple, to create a vision for customers to see and experience our brand…yet when we first opened we were more so just happy to have a place others could come see us (vs us having to always go to them haha).

We quickly realized one of the biggest advantages of brick and mortar was that we now got to show our brand on our terms…and the past 10 years we have leaned into that. We love what we do and everyday we get to curate and display our creations for all (or those that walk by our Southend store) to see 🙌

One of the first things we show new clients about the true value of going custom vs. off-the-rack (or even made-to-measure)? The hidden details. 🪡✨

Specifically: High-level pattern matching.

When you choose a patterned fabric, the design shouldn’t just look good on the chest…it should flow seamlessly from the front panels directly across the seams and into the sleeves.

Everything must be equally and appropriately spaced. Whether it’s a bold windowpane or a classic plaid, the lines should align perfectly.

It’s small, uncompromising details like this that go into crafting a true custom jacket. It’s about so much more than just the fabric and the fit! ✂️🧵

// END OF SUMMER //

One of the things we started doing early on in our seasonal collections for OMJ, was maximizing the seasons our jackets could be worn. Here in Charlotte, one of our light weight fabrics ideal for the warmer months tends to work year round when using the right color pallet. Fall hued earth tones can take you through all the seasons 🙌 and we love maximizing that versatility when helping our clients build out their closets 🥃

// RETAIL //

I had a conversation earlier this week about the general state of retail. It was great, and inspiring…but we also talked about a trend of what I can only describe as complaining and blaming. Small businesses upset over bigger retail moving in, economic changes, landlords etc… I am of course sympathetic to all those things but more so, it reminded me just how far we have come.

When we started in 2013…we were online only and our “world headquarters” was a spare bedroom (pre having kids).

A LOT has changed these past 13 years, but we still love this…the same (if not more)! Instead of online only…online is only 3% of our business. It’s all in-person…experience based now…feeling the fabrics…and most importantly…creating a space that customers can come and gather. We have changed and adapted so many times over the years it sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.

The conversation about retail ended with us both agreeing…retail is ALIVE and well…but retailers have to be willing to listen to what the customers want and shift if needed. Staying still never works, and being a small business is one of the biggest advantages you can have right now, as you are able to adjust and pivot a lot easier than big brands can.

For my fellow small businesses…keep doing great things and remember to focus on the great things YOU are doing and CAN do…not on what everyone else is doing or the negative side of things!
